WhatsApp publishes no daily message limit for the WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business app. As of October 2026 it limits how you reach many people instead: five chats per forward, 256 contacts per broadcast list, up to 35 free broadcasts a month where that cap has rolled out, and a monthly limit on new chats with people who haven't replied.
For a sender, the useful number is not a maximum. It is the pace a number can keep up week after week. This guide sets out what WhatsApp itself limits, then the pacing defaults WavesFlo applies to every connected number, and why each one exists.
What does WhatsApp itself limit?
What WhatsApp's help centre describes are limits on particular ways of reaching many people at once. As checked on 5 October 2026:
| Limit | What it caps | What applies |
|---|---|---|
| Forwarding | Chats per forward | Up to five chats at once. A message that was forwarded to you can go to only one group among them, and one labelled Forwarded many times goes to one chat at a time. See the forward limit guide. |
| Broadcast lists | Recipients per list | Up to 256 contacts, and only people who saved your number receive it. See broadcast limits. |
| Monthly broadcast cap | Broadcasts per month | Where it has rolled out, up to 35 free broadcast messages a month; the count is under Settings, then Broadcasts. WhatsApp says it is rolling out gradually and might not be available everywhere. |
| New chats | Chats started with people who haven't replied | A monthly limit, which WhatsApp's help centre treats separately from forwarding. See the unanswered-message limit. |
| Restrictions and bans | Behaviour, not a count | A restricted account can't start chats with new contacts, create groups or use linked devices until the restriction ends, and spam can lead to a ban. See restricted accounts. |
Accounts on Meta's Cloud API work differently. Meta's developer documentation sets a messaging limit on how many different people a business portfolio can message outside a customer-service window in a moving 24 hours, starting at 250 and rising with quality and volume. Those limits belong to API accounts, not to the WhatsApp app.
Because the app has no published daily figure, the question worth answering is how fast a number can send and still be sending next month. That is what the defaults below are for. If you only need to reach a few people or one group, the everyday options are in how to send a group message on WhatsApp.
How many messages can one number safely send a day?
By default each number sends at most 500 messages a day and 60 in any hour. The daily ceiling bounds the total; the hourly ceiling stops a day's allowance being spent in twenty minutes. When a number reaches its ceiling it leaves rotation until the window resets, and the campaign continues on the rest of the fleet. A reply typed by a person in the shared inbox still counts against the number's daily ceiling.
How long should you wait between WhatsApp messages?
Between one message and the next, each number waits a random 30 to 300 seconds, so a list is never messaged in one burst. Both ends of the range are yours to set.
A cooldown for each person
Once someone has been messaged, nothing else reaches them for 24 hours — across every campaign, not only within one. Two teams running two campaigns cannot accidentally message the same customer twice in a morning.
Quiet hours, allowed days and a posting window
- Quiet hours, 22:00 to 08:00 by default, in your own timezone. Nothing goes out during them.
- Allowed weekdays, so a campaign can skip the days you choose, such as Sundays.
- An optional posting window, 09:00 to 18:00 by default, for campaigns that should only go out in working hours.
How do I send more WhatsApp messages a day?
Raising one number's ceiling is the risky way to grow. Adding numbers is the safe way: ten numbers at 500 a day is 5,000 messages without asking any of them to work harder. WavesFlo spreads a campaign across up to 250 connected numbers on Growth and up to 50,000 on Enterprise, subject to plan. The many-numbers guide covers the reasoning, and the safety page lists every default. To reach many individual people at this pace, see how to message many contacts without a broadcast list.
And a way to stop everything
An emergency pause halts delivery across every campaign and every number at once. Each number's health score, with the reason when it drops, tells you when to use it.
Questions
Is there a daily message limit on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp doesn't publish one for the app. It limits forwarding to five chats at a time and broadcast lists to 256 contacts who saved your number, and its help centre describes monthly limits on broadcasts and on new chats with people who haven't replied.
How many free broadcasts can I send a month on WhatsApp?
Where the monthly broadcast limit has rolled out, up to 35 free broadcast messages a month. You can see the count under Settings, then Broadcasts.
How many WhatsApp messages can one number send per day in WavesFlo?
By default 500 a day and 60 an hour per number. Both can be adjusted, up to a ceiling no setting lifts: 1,000 a day and 120 an hour.
What delay does WavesFlo use between WhatsApp messages?
A randomised 30 to 300 seconds by default, with a typing state shown before each send.
How do I send more WhatsApp messages a day safely?
Connect more numbers rather than raising one number's ceiling, so the volume is shared across the fleet.
