WhatsApp account restricted: what it means, what to do

WhatsApp account restricted? What "Your account is restricted right now" means, what still works, how long it lasts, and how it differs from a ban.

A restricted WhatsApp account can still chat with contacts and groups it has already exchanged chats or calls with, but for a set period can't start chats or calls with new contacts, create groups, add group members or use linked devices. WhatsApp applies it when recent activity looks like spam, automated or bulk messaging, and lifts it automatically.

Below: the exact notices, what still works, how to see the time left, how a restriction differs from a ban, what triggers one, and how teams that message many customers avoid it. Details are as of October 2026.

What "Your account is restricted right now" means

WhatsApp shows one of two notices: "Your account is restricted right now" or "Your account may be restricted soon". For either, its help centre says you don't need to do anything: the restriction ends once the allocated time passes, and WhatsApp notifies you. Its explanation is that recent activity on the account might be showing signs of spam, automated or bulk messaging, which its Terms of Service prohibit.

A restriction is a step short of a ban: existing chats keep working, and it ends by itself. If the app says "This phone number can't use WhatsApp", the number is banned, and the process is different: see what to do when WhatsApp bans a number. "Account locked due to inactivity" is different again. It means the account has gone unused, and you should register the number again soon, or the account and its data may be deleted. "Restricted chat" is unrelated to your account's standing. It is a privacy setting that a group admin, or either person in a one-to-one chat, can turn on. In that chat only, it stops automatic saving of media to the gallery, chat export, Meta AI features and use on linked devices such as WhatsApp Web.

What you can and can't do while restricted

A restricted account, feature by feature
ActionWhile restricted
Chat with contacts you've already chatted with or calledYes
Keep talking in groups you've already chatted inYes
Start a chat or call with a new contactNo
Create a new groupNo
Add new members to a groupNo
Use linked devices such as WhatsApp Web and the desktop appsNo, and some may be logged out. See why WhatsApp Web logs out.

In practice a restricted number can serve the people already talking to it and nobody else. For a support line that may barely show. For a number that exists to reach new people, it stops the work completely until the period ends.

How long does a WhatsApp restriction last?

WhatsApp does not publish a fixed length. It says the restriction ends automatically once the allocated time passes, and you get a notification in WhatsApp when it does. You can see the time left from the app:

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap New Chat.
  2. Choose a contact you have never chatted with before.
  3. Read the pop-up. While the account is restricted, it shows the time remaining.

WhatsApp describes no appeal for a restriction; it lifts by itself. Waiting is the only way through, which makes either notice the moment to stop whatever you were doing that day.

Why is my WhatsApp restricted?

WhatsApp does not publish thresholds, and the notice doesn't say which messages tipped it. The reasons its own temporary-ban screen can give are a fair guide to the signals it watches:

  • Many messages to people who don't have your number saved in their contacts.
  • The same message sent to many people.
  • Lots of people blocking or reporting you.
  • Creating many groups with people who haven't saved your number.
  • Heavy use of broadcast lists.

WhatsApp's help centre adds that a modified copy of WhatsApp can lead to a ban or to restrictions on the account, including on linking devices.

Unanswered messages are watched separately. In October 2025 WhatsApp announced a monthly cap on messages sent to people you don't know that get no reply, tested first in several countries; a pop-up shows your count as you approach it. As of October 2026, WhatsApp hasn't published the number or the full list of countries. See the unanswered-message limit.

What to do during and after a restriction

  • Keep answering the people already in your chats. Replies in existing chats still work.
  • Pause campaigns, broadcasts and group invitations on that number until the notification says the restriction has ended.
  • Don't move the same list to another number or phone. It repeats the pattern that caused the restriction and puts a second number at risk.
  • Find the cause: a bought list, one message sent to hundreds of unsaved numbers, a broadcast nobody asked for, or a run of blocks.
  • When it lifts, restart slowly, starting with people who have replied before, and link again any devices that were logged out.

Treat the restriction as the last warning. WhatsApp says any account engaging in spam, automated or bulk messaging could be banned, so doing the same thing again once it lifts is the riskiest move available.

WhatsApp Business accounts and Meta's Cloud API

WhatsApp's help article on restrictions covers WhatsApp Business app accounts too. Its one business-specific point: losing a verified badge is not a restriction. A business can lose the badge if it doesn't complete extra verification or no longer meets the requirements, but the account keeps working with no limits on chats, calls or groups.

Numbers on Meta's Cloud API, the WhatsApp Business Platform, run under separate enforcement. As of October 2026, Meta's developer documentation lists a one- or three-day block on marketing, utility and authentication messages; a five-, seven- or 30-day block on sending any messages and adding phone numbers; an account lock that only an appeal removes; and permanent disablement. Not every spam violation can be appealed. Where an appeal is possible, Meta says the decision arrives through Business Manager and typically takes 24 to 48 hours.

How teams avoid getting restricted

Restrictions respond to patterns, so prevention sits in how sending is organised rather than in any one setting:

  • Pace every number: irregular gaps, a modest daily total and nothing overnight. WhatsApp publishes no daily figure for the app; these pacing defaults are a sensible start.
  • Message people who asked. WhatsApp's guidance is to contact people who messaged you first or asked you to.
  • Invite replies. Ask something worth answering, because messages to people who never reply count towards the monthly cap WhatsApp is testing in some countries.
  • Don't blast unsaved numbers. A number that suddenly messages hundreds of people who haven't saved it matches the first pattern WhatsApp names.
  • Share volume across numbers without hiding behind them. Spreading a campaign across many numbers keeps each one's pace human; it does not make unwanted messages acceptable, and each number collects its own blocks.

WavesFlo applies this per number, with defaults you can change: 500 sends a day and 60 an hour, a randomised 30 to 300 second gap, quiet hours from 22:00 to 08:00, a 24-hour cooldown per recipient and opt-outs enforced at send time across every campaign. If a connected number stops being able to send, you are told, it leaves rotation and the campaign continues on the other numbers. None of that can stop WhatsApp restricting a number; it makes the patterns that lead there less likely.

Questions

Can I still reply to people while my WhatsApp is restricted?

Yes, in chats with contacts and groups you've already exchanged chats or calls with. What you can't do is start a chat or call with someone new, create groups or add members.

Can I appeal a WhatsApp restriction?

WhatsApp's help centre describes no appeal for a restriction: it ends automatically after a set period and you get a notification. If you see "This phone number can't use WhatsApp", that is a ban, which you can ask WhatsApp to review in the app.

Why did WhatsApp Web log out when my account was restricted?

A restricted account can't use linked devices, and WhatsApp says some companion devices may be logged out. Link them again once the restriction ends.

Does a restriction mean my number will be banned next?

Not necessarily, but it is a warning. WhatsApp says any account engaging in spam, automated or bulk messaging could be banned, so change what caused it before the restriction ends.

What does "Account locked due to inactivity" mean?

It isn't a restriction. The account has gone unused, and you need to register the number again soon or the account and its data may be deleted.
