What is a wa.me link?
A wa.me link is WhatsApp’s click-to-chat address: https://wa.me/ followed by a phone number in full international format. Tapping it opens a chat with that number without saving it as a contact, on a phone or on WhatsApp Web. Add ?text= and a message, and the chat opens with that message already typed.

The number
How do you write the number in a WhatsApp link?
Use the full international number: the country code, then the number. India is 91, so 098765 43210 becomes 919876543210.
Leave out the plus sign, any leading zeros, spaces, brackets and dashes. WhatsApp's own example: use https://wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXX, not https://wa.me/+001-(XXX)XXXXXXX.
The number has to have an active WhatsApp account. A link to a number that isn't on WhatsApp opens, but there is no one to chat with.
The pre-filled message must be URL-encoded: a space becomes %20 and a line break %0A. The generator does this for you.

How do sales teams use WhatsApp links for inbound leads?
A WhatsApp link turns a visitor into a conversation in one tap, which is why sales teams put one wherever a form used to be. What decides whether the lead becomes a customer is what happens to the chat after it arrives.
Give every source its own pre-filled message: "Hi, I saw your Google ad for the 2BHK in Baner" on one link, "Hi, I'm asking from your Instagram page" on another. WhatsApp does not tell you which link someone tapped, but the first message does.
Point each link at the number that should answer it: sales on one, support on another. A lead that lands on the wrong phone waits.
Answer fast and from a shared inbox, not one rep's phone, so a lead isn't lost when that person is busy, off shift or leaves.
Keep the message short and in the customer's voice. They can edit it, but most send it as it is.

Why doesn't my wa.me link work?
Usually the number format: a plus sign, a leading 0, spaces or a missing country code. The other common cause is a number with no active WhatsApp account. Rebuild the link here and tap Test it.
Can I add a message to a WhatsApp link?
Yes. Add ?text= followed by the URL-encoded message, as in https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%20there. The message appears in the text box of the chat, and the sender can change it before sending.
Can I make a WhatsApp link without a phone number?
Yes: https://wa.me/?text= followed by the message. Whoever taps it sees their contact list and chooses where the message goes. It suits a share button more than a contact button.
Can I see who clicked my WhatsApp link?
No. WhatsApp doesn't report link clicks, as of October 2026. You see the chats that arrive. A different pre-filled message for each place you put a link tells you where each conversation came from.
