WhatsApp Web logs out when the browser's link to your account ends. The usual causes: WhatsApp unopened on the phone for over 14 days, browser data cleared or "Stay logged in on this browser" left unticked, the session removed from the phone's Linked devices, or WhatsApp reinstalled or moved to a new phone. Each has a direct fix.

The table maps each cause to what you'll notice and the fix. After it: how to link again and stay linked, screens that look like a logout but aren't, the desktop apps, India's SIM-binding rule, and how to keep a business number linked reliably. Details are as of October 2026.

Why does WhatsApp Web log out automatically?

Every browser, desktop app or tablet you link is a separate linked device with its own session. There is no fixed expiry. A session ends when one of these happens:

Why WhatsApp Web logs out, and the fix for each cause (as of October 2026)
CauseWhat you noticeFix
Phone's WhatsApp unused for over 14 daysEvery linked device logs out, usually after time away from the phoneLink again, then open WhatsApp on the phone at least every 14 days
The linked device unused for 30 daysOnly the device you stopped using is logged outLink it again. WhatsApp disconnects linked devices after 30 days of inactivity
Logged out from the phoneThe page returns to the QR code and the device is gone from Linked devicesCheck who has the phone, then link again. Anyone holding it can remove a session
Stay logged in on this browser untickedLogged out every time you close the tabTick the box on the login screen before you scan
Browser data cleared, or a private windowLogged out after a clean-up, or whenever the private window closesUse a normal window and exempt web.whatsapp.com from automatic clearing
No free device slotOn a shared number, your session is gone after someone made room for a new deviceOnly four devices link at once (more on some paid WhatsApp Business plans). Remove the ones nobody uses; see linked device limits
WhatsApp reinstalled, or the number registered on another phoneEvery linked device logs out at the same momentVerify the number on the phone, then link each device again. If it wasn't you, recover the account and turn on two-step verification
Account restricted, or a sync problemLinked devices stop working, or WhatsApp shows "Your devices were logged out"Wait for a restriction to end; after a sync logout, update both apps and link again. See restricted accounts

Two rules catch people out. The 14-day rule is about the phone, not the computer: WhatsApp Web keeps working with the phone switched off, right up until the phone's WhatsApp has gone unused for more than 14 days. The 30-day rule is about each linked device, so a laptop left in a drawer for a month needs linking again even if the phone is used every day.

The reinstall case is by design. WhatsApp's encryption whitepaper describes deleting and reinstalling WhatsApp on the phone as the way to revoke every linked device immediately, because the phone's identity keys are regenerated. A phone swap has the same effect. WhatsApp's servers can also log linked devices out. That is what "Your devices were logged out" means: WhatsApp couldn't verify that data was syncing properly between your devices and logged them out as a precaution.

How to link WhatsApp Web and stay logged in

  1. On the computer, open web.whatsapp.com in a normal browser window, not a private one.
  2. On the login screen, tick Stay logged in on this browser. WhatsApp's own description of the option: if selected, you stay logged in after closing the browser tab.
  3. On an Android phone, open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu, then Linked devices > Link a device. On an iPhone, tap Settings or your profile picture, then Linked devices > Link device.
  4. If asked, unlock with your fingerprint, face or phone PIN, then point the phone at the QR code on the computer.
  5. Open WhatsApp on the phone at least every 14 days, and use the computer at least every 30.
  6. If the browser clears cookies or site data when it closes, add web.whatsapp.com as an exception.

No camera, or the code won't scan? On WhatsApp Web and WhatsApp for Windows, choose Link with phone number (it may read Log in with phone number) instead. Enter your number, and the computer shows an eight-character code. On the phone, tap the Enter code notification from WhatsApp, confirm the device and type the code.

To end a session yourself, go to Linked devices on the phone, tap the device and tap Log out. On the computer, Settings > Log out does the same from the other end.

Logged out, or just not connected?

Some screens look like a logout but leave the session intact:

  • Computer not connected, with "Make sure your computer has an active internet connection". The computer is offline and the session is fine. Reload once the connection is back.
  • "WhatsApp is open in another window". WhatsApp Web runs in one tab at a time; click Use here to move it to the tab in front of you.
  • A Connecting to WhatsApp screen that never finishes. Often the network: office and campus Wi-Fi can block WhatsApp Web, and WhatsApp suggests letting traffic to web.whatsapp.com and .whatsapp.net through, or trying another network or a hotspot.

WhatsApp's own fix list for connection problems includes clearing the browser's cache and cookies. That can help, but it also ends the session, so expect to scan the QR code again. WhatsApp Web needs a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Opera or Safari.

Why WhatsApp Desktop keeps logging out

The WhatsApp apps for Windows and Mac are linked devices too, so the same rules apply: the 14-day phone rule, the 30-day inactivity rule and the four-device limit. The session lives in the app's own data, so uninstalling the app, resetting it or moving to a new computer means linking again. WhatsApp for Windows needs 64-bit Windows 10, version 1903 or newer.

India: SIM binding and web sessions

In India, the Department of Telecommunications' SIM-binding directions of 28 November 2025 required messaging apps to stay tied to an active SIM in the phone and, in their original form, to log web sessions out at least every six hours. On 2 April 2026, in a written answer in the Rajya Sabha, the government said the six-hour rule had been replaced by logouts based on risk-based analysis, with no fixed time period, and that the compliance deadline is 31 December 2026. As of October 2026 that deadline stands. If your sessions in India start ending on a schedule, check where the SIM binding rule stands before hunting for a fault.

Keeping a business number linked reliably

A number that a team or a tool depends on needs the same care as any linked session, with less room for surprises:

  • Give the number its own phone, kept charged and online, and open WhatsApp on it every day. That keeps it well inside the 14-day rule.
  • Count the four slots. A reception PC, a manager's laptop and a campaign tool already use three, so decide who owns the fourth before anyone needs it. Linked devices limits covers what counts towards the four.
  • Don't reinstall WhatsApp on that phone or move it to a new handset in the middle of a campaign. Either one logs out every linked device at once.
  • Turn on two-step verification and keep notifications on. With notifications, you can remove a linked device you don't recognise as soon as it appears, and WhatsApp asks you to confirm when it detects an unrecognised device.
  • Keep modified WhatsApp apps off that phone. WhatsApp says they can lead to restrictions, including on linking devices.
  • Keep sending measured. A restricted account can't use linked devices at all.

WavesFlo links numbers the same way, by QR code from Linked devices, like WhatsApp Web, so the phone-side rules here apply to it too: the 14-day rule, the four-device limit, and logouts after a reinstall or a restriction. When a connected number drops, you are told, it leaves rotation and campaigns carry on across the other numbers; you reconnect it from the dashboard, and developers can listen for the account.disconnected and account.qr_required webhook events. Connecting a number with Linked devices walks through the setup.

Questions

Does WhatsApp Web log out when my phone is off?

Not straight away. Linked devices keep working without the phone online, but they log out once WhatsApp on the phone has gone unused for more than 14 days.

Does a WhatsApp Web session expire?

Not on a fixed timer. A session lasts while the phone is used at least every 14 days and the browser at least every 30 days, unless it is logged out, the browser data is cleared or WhatsApp is reinstalled on the phone.

Why does WhatsApp Web log out when I close the browser?

Either Stay logged in on this browser was unticked when you scanned the code, or you were in a private window, which deletes its data when it closes.

How many devices can use WhatsApp Web at the same time?

As of October 2026, up to four linked devices per account, counting browsers, desktop apps, tablets and companion phones, alongside the main phone. A WhatsApp Business account on a Meta Verified or Meta One plan can link up to 10, depending on the plan.

Can someone else log me out of WhatsApp Web?

Yes. Anyone with your phone can remove the session from its Linked devices screen, and WhatsApp itself logs linked devices out when it can't verify that data is syncing properly.
