WhatsApp forward limit: how many chats at once

The WhatsApp forward limit is five chats at a time, one group for forwarded messages and one chat for "Forwarded many times". Why, and how to reach more.

The WhatsApp forward limit is five chats at a time, and only one of the five can be a group if the message was already forwarded to you. A message forwarded through a chain of five or more chats is labelled "Forwarded many times", with a double arrow, and can go to one chat at a time.

Those rules have tightened step by step since 2018. This guide sets them out as of October 2026, explains what the labels tell the people you forward to, gives the dated history, covers what changes when you copy and paste instead, and compares the legitimate ways to get one message to more than five chats.

What does "Forwarded many times" mean?

"Forwarded many times" means a message has already been passed through a chain of five or more chats before it reached you. WhatsApp shows it with a double-arrow icon and, once a message carries that label, you can only forward it to one chat at a time. The label was introduced in April 2020 to slow viral forwarding.

Two points trip people up. First, each limit applies to a single forward, not to a day: after sending to five chats you can select the message and forward it again, and WhatsApp publishes no daily forwarding cap. Second, WhatsApp can't see how far a message has travelled. The counter each message carries is end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp itself can't tell how many times it has been forwarded.

What "Forwarded" and "Forwarded many times" mean

The Forwarded label, added in July 2018, tells the recipient that the person who sent a message didn't write it. WhatsApp shows it on anything you forward that isn't your own outgoing message, so forwarding something you wrote yourself carries no label.

Forwarded many times appears once a message has been forwarded through a chain of five or more chats. It comes with a double-arrow icon, which WhatsApp's 2020 announcement said shows the message "did not originate from a close contact". From then on, the message can go to only one chat per forward, however many times it is passed on.

Why can a WhatsApp message only be forwarded to one chat?

You have hit one of two rules. If the message shows the double arrow, it can go to one chat per forward, and WhatsApp won't let you pick a second. If it shows the plain Forwarded label, you can still pick five chats, but only one group among them. WABetaInfo first reported the group rule reaching beta testers on 8 March 2022, in WhatsApp beta for Android 2.22.7.2.

Inside WhatsApp, the way on is to forward again, one chat or one group at a time. It works, and it is meant to be tedious. If you forward the same thing into so many groups that the limit hurts, you need a different tool, not a way round the rule. The options further down are built for that job.

If WhatsApp won't forward a message even to one chat, its help centre suggests restarting your phone, updating WhatsApp and your phone's software, and switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data.

WhatsApp has put numbers on the effect twice. It said total forwards fell 25% globally after its earlier forwarding limits, and a spokesperson told TechCrunch in April 2020 that highly forwarded messages fell 70% after the one-chat rule. Its help centre now gives the reason in one line: the limits keep conversations "intimate and personal" and help prevent spam and misinformation.

Does copying the text get round the forward limit?

Mechanically, yes. The label and the counter travel only with WhatsApp's Forward action, so text you copy and paste arrives as a new message from you, with no label, and no forwarding rule applies to it.

It doesn't change how the message lands. Anyone who didn't ask for it can block you or report it, label or not. WhatsApp's help centre says it uses machine learning and reports from users to detect and ban accounts that send unwanted automated messages, and that it bans accounts reported multiple times. Pasting into new chats has a second cost where WhatsApp is testing its monthly limit on messages to people who haven't replied, announced in October 2025: copies that go unanswered count towards it. WhatsApp told TechCrunch it was testing different limits and, as of October 2026, has published no number. See the unanswered-message limit and why WhatsApp bans numbers.

The label also did the reader a favour: it told them the words weren't yours. Removing it makes a chain message look personal, which is the opposite of what the person receiving it would want.

How to send one WhatsApp message to more than five chats

WhatsApp's own advice, in the same help article that sets the limits, is to create a group or share a link. The realistic options compare like this:

Ways to reach more than five chats with one message, as of October 2026
OptionReachBest forThe catch
Forwarding in batchesFive chats per forwardA dozen people or fewerAn already-forwarded message reaches one group per forward
One groupUp to 1,024 membersPeople who all need the same update and may replyEvery reply reaches every member, so a busy group gets noisy
Broadcast listUp to 256 contacts per listPrivate updates to customers who know youOnly people who saved your number receive it, and where WhatsApp's monthly cap has rolled out you get up to 35 free broadcast messages a month
Community announcement groupUp to 2,000 members, per WhatsApp's help centreOne organisation with several groupsOnly community admins post, and only inside that community
ChannelAnyone who follows itAnnouncements that need no repliesMostly one-way: followers can react, vote in polls and answer an admin's questions, but only admins see the answers and followers can't post; the admin's number stays hidden, and so do theirs
Group campaign tool, such as WavesFloEvery group your sending numbers belong toThe same post in many existing groupsThe numbers must already be members, and a post reaches everyone in each group

Community vs group vs broadcast list vs channel compares the native options in depth, and the broadcast limit guide covers the monthly cap.

Posting one message into many groups

If the real job is getting one announcement into thirty groups you already belong to, forwarding in fives is slow, and the read receipts end up split across thirty Message info screens with nothing that totals them. A WavesFlo group campaign posts the message into each group you select that its connected numbers are members of, paced by default with a randomised 30 to 300 second gap and a daily and hourly allowance per number, and reports delivery and read rates for each group. It isn't a way round the rules: a group post reaches everyone in the group, and anyone who didn't want it can report it like any other message. WhatsApp's help centre also notes that one community announcement, rather than the same message repeated across groups, may help reduce the risk of being flagged as spam, so use a community wherever it covers everyone. How to send one message to many WhatsApp groups walks through it, and the daily pacing guide explains the defaults.

Questions

How many chats can I forward a WhatsApp message to?

Up to five at a time, as of October 2026. If the message has already been forwarded, only one of the five can be a group, and a message labelled Forwarded many times can go to one chat at a time.

What does "Forwarded many times" mean on WhatsApp?

The message has been forwarded through a chain of five or more chats. WhatsApp marks it with a double arrow and limits it to one chat per forward.

Can I forward a WhatsApp message to more than 5 chats?

Not in one go. You can forward it again to the next five, or reach more people with one message through a group, a broadcast list, a community announcement group or a channel.

Can WhatsApp see how many times my message was forwarded?

No. The forward counter is end-to-end encrypted, so WhatsApp itself can't tell how many times a message has been forwarded.

Does WhatsApp show Forwarded on messages I wrote myself?

No. The Forwarded label only appears on messages you forward that aren't your own outgoing messages.

Is there a daily forwarding limit on WhatsApp?

WhatsApp doesn't publish one; its limits apply to each forward. Sending the same message to many people who don't want it can still get a number reported and restricted.
