A WhatsApp group can hold up to 1,024 members, and WhatsApp sets no cap on how many of them are admins. A group name can run to 100 characters and a description to 2,048. A community links up to 100 groups plus an announcement group, but holds 2,000 people in total. Voice and video calls take up to 32 people.
This page puts every limit that touches a group in one table, then covers what happens when a group fills up, the ways past 1,024, the admin rules, the limits WhatsApp enforces without publishing a number, and how the ceiling has moved since 2022. It is written for people who run busy groups: residents' associations, schools, coaching batches, reseller networks.
Every WhatsApp group limit in one table
| What | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Members in a group | 1,024 | The same cap since November 2022. |
| Admins in a group | No cap | Any admin can promote any member. The creator can't be removed. |
| Group name | 100 characters | Raised from 25 in 2023. |
| Group description | 2,048 characters | Raised from 512 in 2023. |
| Groups in a community | 100, plus the announcement group | Members can suggest groups for admins to approve. |
| Members in a community | 2,000 | Counted across the announcement group and every linked group. |
| Community admins | 20 | The community's creator can't be removed. |
| Voice or video call | 32 people | For a video call in a bigger group, you pick up to 31 others to ring. |
| Poll | 12 options | Question up to 255 characters, each option up to 100. |
| Pinned messages | Up to 4 per chat | WhatsApp's help centre, October 2026; some app versions still allow three. Pins last 24 hours, 7 days (the default) or 30 days. |
| File size | 2 GB | Sent as a document. Video sent as media is compressed, so send it as a document to keep the original quality. |
| Broadcast list | 256 contacts per list | Only people who saved your number receive it. Where WhatsApp's monthly cap has rolled out, it allows up to 35 free broadcast messages a month. |
| Forwarding | 5 chats at a time | A message that was already forwarded can go to only one group at a time. |
| Linked devices | 4 per account | They log out if the main phone goes unused for 14 days. |
| @all mention | Admins only, above 32 members | In groups of 32 or fewer, anyone can use it. Announced on 4 August 2026. |
| Delete for everyone | About two days | Covers your own messages and, for admins, any member's message. |
| History for new members | Up to 100 messages | Chosen by whoever sends it, from 25 up to 100, plus all available pinned messages. See message history for new members. |
Two of these catch people out. The community figure is a total, not a per-group number: 100 linked groups of 1,024 would be 102,400 seats, but a community stops at 2,000 people. And a broadcast list of 256 is not 256 recipients: only the people on it who have saved your number receive the message.
What happens when a WhatsApp group is full?
At 1,024 members the group stops taking people. Admins can't add anyone, and in the Add to groups picker on a contact's profile a full group appears greyed out. Inside a community, a full group can only be requested once a member leaves or is removed, and the community's general chat, which has the same 1,024 cap, turns new members away until there is space. People who are turned away have to try again once a seat frees up.
Making room means removing people, and that is visible. Only admins are notified when someone leaves, but everyone in the group can see the Past members list in Group info, with names and numbers, for 60 days after a person leaves or is removed. Clear out long-silent members before a busy season, not in the middle of one.
How to reach more than 1,024 people on WhatsApp
You can't raise the cap on a group. You can only spread the audience across something else, and each option trades away something:
- Several groups: split by area, batch or product line, each under 1,024. Everyone can still talk, but every post has to go into each group separately, and forwarding reaches five chats at a time at most.
- A community: link up to 100 groups and post once in the announcement group, where members don't see each other's numbers. It covers up to 2,000 people in total; beyond that it doesn't help. Community vs group vs broadcast vs channel compares the structures side by side.
- A channel: one-way updates with no follower cap. Followers can react and vote in polls but can't reply, and every channel is public.
- Broadcast lists: private copies to up to 256 contacts per list, only for people who have saved your number, with a monthly cap in some countries. The broadcast limit guide has the current rules.
- A group campaign: one message posted into every group a number belongs to, on a schedule. See how to send one message to many WhatsApp groups.
How many admins can a WhatsApp group have?
There is no cap. WhatsApp's help centre says a group can have any number of admins and that any admin can make another member an admin. Four rules sit around that:
- The person who created the group can't be removed and stays an admin unless they leave.
- Only admins can dismiss or remove an admin.
- If the last admin leaves, WhatsApp picks a member at random and makes them admin.
- WhatsApp support can't make anyone an admin, even someone who was one before and was dismissed.
Communities and channels work differently: a community takes up to 20 admins, and a channel owner can invite up to 16. What each admin switch actually controls is covered in WhatsApp group admin settings, explained.
Limits WhatsApp doesn't publish
Some of the limits that matter most have no public number. WhatsApp doesn't say how many groups one account can create or join, or how many people you can add in a day. What its help centre does confirm is that these limits exist:
- Adding people: after adding too many members to groups you may see an error and have to wait 24 hours before adding more people or creating more groups.
- Communities: linking a group can be blocked for up to 24 hours after spam reports, or when the group has recently added members.
- Privacy settings: someone whose Groups privacy is set to My contacts can't be added by a non-contact. The admin is offered a private invite to send instead, and it expires after three days.
Behind all of this sits WhatsApp's spam detection, which combines machine learning with user reports. Its guidance is to get permission before adding anyone to a group and never to create groups in automated ways, and it says it bans accounts that are reported multiple times. Adding strangers in bulk is the quickest way to collect those reports. If you need people in a group, share a link and let them choose to join, as covered in how to add members without saving their number.
How the WhatsApp group limit changed
- Until May 2022: 256 members per group.
- May 2022: 512 members, announced alongside 2 GB file sharing and emoji reactions.
- November 2022: 1,024 members, launched with communities, polls and 32-person video calls.
- 2023: group names went from 25 to 100 characters and descriptions from 512 to 2,048.
- June 2024: 32-person video calls reached WhatsApp's desktop apps.
- August 2026: @all mentions, limited to admins in groups over 32 members, plus poll end times and hidden voter names.
The member cap hasn't moved since November 2022. For bigger audiences, WhatsApp has added structures around the group, communities and then channels, rather than making the group itself larger.
Maximum members in a WhatsApp group call
A WhatsApp voice or video call takes up to 32 people as of October 2026, on phones and on the Windows and Mac desktop apps. In a group of more than 32 members, the person who starts the call picks up to 31 others to ring. The 32-participant ceiling is the same on voice and video, and WhatsApp hasn't moved it since the eight-participant limit was raised in 2021.
Running many groups at once
Once an audience spans several full groups, the recurring job is posting the same thing into each of them at a sensible hour, without one number doing all the sending in a burst. WavesFlo runs this as a group campaign: one message goes into every group your connected numbers are members of, with a randomised 30 to 300 second gap between posts, daily and hourly allowances per number, and delivery and read rates for each group afterwards. It can't create groups or add members, and a group post reaches everyone in that group. Managing many WhatsApp groups covers the rest of the routine.
Questions
How many people can be in a WhatsApp group in 2026?
Up to 1,024 as of October 2026, the same cap since November 2022. Once a group is full, nobody else can join or be added until someone leaves or is removed.

Yes. WhatsApp sets no cap on admins, and any admin can promote other members. The group's creator can't be removed and stays an admin unless they leave.
How many members can a WhatsApp community have?
Up to 2,000 people in total as of October 2026, counted across the announcement group and every linked group. A community can link up to 100 groups, and each still has its own 1,024-member cap.
What is the character limit for a WhatsApp group name and description?
100 characters for the name and 2,048 for the description. Both were raised in 2023, from 25 and 512.
Is there a limit on how many WhatsApp groups I can join or create?
WhatsApp doesn't publish one. Its help centre does say that adding too many members to groups can bring an error and a 24-hour wait before you can add more people or create more groups.
