Only a group admin can delete a WhatsApp group for everyone, and there is no single button for it: you remove every member, exit the group, then tap Delete group. A member can only exit and delete the group from their own phone. Either way, other people keep their copy of the chat until they delete it themselves.
The steps below match WhatsApp for Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web as of October 2026. After them come what members keep, the creator rule that can stop an admin, groups inside a community and what to save before you start.
Can you delete a WhatsApp group for everyone?
Yes, if you're an admin and you empty the group first. WhatsApp's help centre treats deleting a group for all members as an admin's job that starts with removing every member; exit before that and the group carries on without you. Deletion is also narrower than most people expect: the group stops working, but it doesn't disappear from other people's phones.
| Who you are | What you can do | What happens for everyone else |
|---|---|---|
| Admin, after removing every member | Exit, then delete the group | Each person keeps the chat and its history, but nobody can send messages in it |
| Admin, with members still in the group | Exit, and delete the group from your own phone only | The group carries on; if you were the only admin, WhatsApp makes a random member admin |
| Member | Exit, or exit and delete the group from your phone | The group carries on, and only admins are told you left |
| Community admin or owner | Unlink a group from the community, or deactivate the whole community if you own it | Unlinked groups keep working as ordinary groups |
How to delete a WhatsApp group as an admin
Remove everyone before you exit. Once you leave with members still inside, the group carries on and you can only delete your own copy. On Android and iPhone:
- Open the group and tap its name to open Group info.
- Tap a member, then Remove (followed by their name) and OK. Repeat until nobody else is left, other admins included.
- Tap Exit group. You may also see Report group; use it only if the group was used for spam, scams or abuse.
- Choose Exit group to keep the history on your phone, or Exit and delete for me to erase it. On Android you can also tick a box to delete the group's media from your gallery.
- If you kept the history, open Group info again whenever you're ready and tap Delete group, then Delete group to confirm.
On WhatsApp Web the steps are the same with clicks, except for removing people: hover over a member in Group info, click the small down arrow next to their name, then Remove and Remove again. WhatsApp's steps remove members one at a time, so set aside time for a group of a few hundred.
What happens to members and messages when a group is deleted?
Deleting stops a group; it doesn't erase it from anyone else's phone. As of October 2026, WhatsApp's help centre describes it like this:
- Members keep their copy. Removing people or deleting the group doesn't delete it on their devices. It stays in their Chats list with every earlier message, photo and document until they delete it themselves.
- Nobody can post again. Once everyone has been removed, the group is closed to new messages for all of them.
- Removed members are listed. Each removed person's name and number appear under Past members in Group info, where they stay visible for up to 60 days.
- Your copy is gone for good. A deleted group can't be restored, and WhatsApp can't recover its history for you. To carry on, create a new group.
- Media can go too. Android offers to remove the group's media from your gallery when you delete it, and WhatsApp's iPhone instructions say deleting a group also removes media received in it from the phone. Save anything you need first.
So deleting is the wrong tool for taking back something said in the group, such as a wrong fee figure or a number shared by mistake. Delete that message for everyone instead: an admin can do it for anyone's message for about two days after it was sent. WhatsApp group admin settings covers the other admin controls.
How to delete a WhatsApp group as a member
A member can't close a group for anyone else. You can leave it and remove it from your own Chats list, and WhatsApp only lets you delete a group chat after you've exited it. From inside the group, on any device:
- Open the group and tap (or click) its name.
- Tap Exit group. Report group appears here too: it sends WhatsApp the last five messages, and nobody in the group is told.
- Choose Exit and delete for me to leave and remove the group in one go, or Exit group to leave and keep the history.
- To delete a group you left earlier, open it, tap its name, then Delete group and Delete group again.
From the Chats list it takes fewer taps. Android: tap and hold the group, tap More options (the three dots), then Exit group twice; tap and hold it again, tap the bin icon and Delete group. iPhone: swipe left on the group, tap More, then Exit group twice; swipe left again and tap More, Delete group, Delete group. WhatsApp Web: hover over the group, click the down arrow, then Exit group, Exit and delete for me and Delete group.
Only admins are told you left, but anyone still in the group can see your name and number under Past members for up to 60 days; leaving a WhatsApp group silently explains that list. Two shortcuts don't do what they sound like. Clear chat empties the messages but keeps you in the group, and Delete all chats in Settings leaves your groups in the Chats tab, because you stay in every group until you exit it. If you only want the noise gone, mute the group or archive the chat instead.
How to delete a group that's part of a community
Unlink it first. WhatsApp's help centre says exiting a group that belongs to a community also takes you out of the community and its other groups. A group admin can unlink it from Group info → Remove from community → Remove; a community admin can do the same from Community info → Manage groups, by tapping the X next to the group. Once unlinked, its members can still use it as an ordinary group, and you can empty and delete it as above.
To close the whole community, its owner opens Community info, taps Deactivate community at the bottom, then Deactivate twice. Every group is unlinked and keeps working in the Chats tab, nobody can post in the community's announcements again, and there is no way to reactivate it. WhatsApp's community guide suggests posting a final message explaining the plan before you do it. How to create a WhatsApp community explains how the pieces fit together.
What should you save before deleting a group?
- The chat itself. On Android, open the group and tap More options → More → Export chat; on iPhone, tap the group name → Export chat. Choose with or without media. You get a text file (a ZIP on iPhone) for your records, which can't be imported back into WhatsApp. If an admin has switched on Restricted chat, nobody can export the group.
- The files people will ask for later: fee receipts, GST invoices, floor plans, exam timetables. Members keep their own copies, but anyone who joins a replacement group won't have them.
- A forwarding address. Post a closing message with the new group's invite link or a contact number, and leave it up for a day or two before you start removing people.
- Evidence, if the group was a scam. WhatsApp suggests choosing Exit group rather than Exit and delete for me, so the messages stay on your phone if you report it to the police or other local authorities.
Closing several groups at once
Organisations tend to retire groups in batches: last year's student groups at a Kota coaching centre, buyer groups for a project that has handed over its flats, a reseller group that only ran through the festive season. WhatsApp's own steps remove members and delete groups one at a time on the phone, so the clean-up takes a while, but the notice doesn't have to. If the groups sit on numbers connected to WavesFlo, one closing message can go into every group on a list at a scheduled hour. The removals and deletions still happen in WhatsApp, because WavesFlo doesn't remove members or delete groups. Sending one message to many WhatsApp groups shows the steps.
Questions
Can I delete a WhatsApp group without removing all members?
Not for everyone. As of October 2026, WhatsApp only lets an admin delete a group for all members after removing every member. If you exit first, deleting removes the group from your own phone and it carries on for everyone else.
What happens when an admin deletes a WhatsApp group?
Members keep the group in their Chats list, with all earlier messages and media, but nobody can send anything in it. Each person's copy stays until they delete it themselves.
Can a deleted WhatsApp group be restored?
No. WhatsApp's help centre says a group can't be restored once it's deleted, and it can't recover the group's history for you. An admin has to create a new group and invite people again.
Why can't I delete a WhatsApp group even though I'm an admin?
Usually because the group's creator is still in it. WhatsApp says a group's creator can't be removed and stays an admin unless they exit, so another admin can't empty the group. Ask the creator to leave or to delete it.
Can I delete all my WhatsApp groups at once?
No. Delete all chats in Settings leaves groups in place, because you stay in each group until you exit it, so every group has to be exited and deleted on its own. Deleting your WhatsApp account does remove you from all your groups.
