To leave a WhatsApp group silently, just exit it: since August 2022, only the admins see a line in the chat saying you left, and no setting hides it from them. Other members get no alert, but for 60 days after you go, any of them can find your name and number in the group's Past members list.
Below are the exit steps for Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web, what other members can still see, what changes when the group belongs to a community, how leaving compares with muting and archiving, and, for admins, what quiet exits are telling you. Menu names match the app as of October 2026.
Does WhatsApp notify the group when you leave?
Only the admins. WhatsApp announced the change on 9 August 2022 and began rolling it out that month: instead of the whole group seeing that someone left, only admins do. As of October 2026 that is still how it works on every platform, and WhatsApp's help centre says the admin notice can't be switched off.
| Who | Told when you leave? | What they can see afterwards |
|---|---|---|
| Group admins | Yes: a line in the chat saying you left | The Past members list, like everyone else |
| Other members | No | You're missing from the member list and the count drops by one; your name, number and possibly your profile photo sit in Past members for up to 60 days |
| Only if you tap Report group | The last five messages from the group; nobody in the group is told you reported it |
Messages you sent stay in everyone else's copy of the chat. Deleting the group only erases it from your own phone.
How do you leave a WhatsApp group on Android, iPhone and Web?
The path is the same on all three. On WhatsApp Web and the desktop apps, click where these steps say tap.
- Open the group chat and tap the group name at the top to open Group info.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Exit group.
- You may also see Report group, for spam or scams. It sends WhatsApp the last five messages, and nobody in the group is told.
- Choose Exit group to leave and keep the chat history, or Exit and delete for me to leave and remove the group from your Chats tab.
On Android, deleting also offers to remove the group's media from your gallery. To delete a group you left earlier, open it, tap the group name, then tap Delete group and Delete group again. A deleted group can't be restored.
Who can see that you left a WhatsApp group, and for how long?
Any member of the group, not only the admins, for 60 days. In Group info, scroll to the members section and tap View member changes. It lists everyone who left or was removed in the last 60 days, with the name they set on WhatsApp and their number, plus their profile photo if their privacy settings allow it, alongside changes such as new usernames. WhatsApp's help centre calls the list of leavers Past members; some versions of the app, and many guides, say past participants.
So a silent exit is only silent in the moment. Anyone who opens Group info in the next two months can see you have gone, and after 60 days you drop off the list. Coming back needs an admin to re-add you or someone to send you the invite link. Leave the same group twice and there is a 24-hour wait before anyone can re-add you, growing with each exit up to 81 days; an invite link skips the wait.
What happens when you leave a group in a WhatsApp community?
WhatsApp's help centre says that if you exit a group that is part of a community, you also exit the community and any groups in it. Leaving the community itself takes you out of every group you're in inside it, and you can't leave a community's announcement group on its own: leaving it takes you out of the community. If you only want one group to go quiet, mute or archive it instead.
- Open the Communities tab and tap the community.
- Tap the menu, then Community info, then Exit community.
- Choose Exit community to keep the chat history, or Exit and delete for me.
The admin who created a community can't simply exit it. They have to deactivate it, which unlinks every group (they carry on as ordinary groups), stops anyone posting in Announcements and can't be undone. You can archive single groups inside a community but not the community itself; archive all of its groups and it leaves your Chats tab and waits in the Communities tab. Community vs group explains how the pieces fit.
Should you mute, archive or leave a WhatsApp group?
| Option | Admins told? | Messages still arrive? | Alerts | Undo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Exit group | Yes | No | None | Only if you're re-added or rejoin by link |
| Mute (8 hours, 1 week or Always) | No | Yes | None, except mentions and replies to you | Unmute at any time |
| Archive | No | Yes | None, unless you're mentioned or replied to | Unarchive at any time |
| Exit and delete for me | Yes | No | None | Only by rejoining, and the erased history is gone for good |
- Mute: open the group, tap its name, tap Notifications and turn on Mute under Messages (Mute notifications on iPhone), then pick 8 hours, 1 week or Always. Nobody is told. Mentions and replies to you still break through, and @all mentions can be muted separately with Mute @all mentions; how @all works has the detail.
- Archive: on Android, tap and hold the group in Chats and tap the archive icon; on iPhone, swipe left and tap Archive. Archived chats stay archived when new messages arrive, unless you turn off Keep chats archived under Settings → Chats.
- Stop the media: in Group info, set Media visibility to No on Android, or Save to Photos to Never on iPhone. Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download covers every chat at once.
- Mute many groups at once: put them in a custom list, then open Settings → Lists, tap the list and turn on Mute.
Muting doesn't hide that you read the group, either. Read receipts in group chats can't be switched off, so once you open the chat, senders can see in Message info that you've read their messages. And leaving doesn't stop the same people adding you again. To prevent that, go to Settings → Privacy → Groups and choose My contacts, or My contacts except… to exclude specific people.
For admins: what quiet exits are telling you
Admins still see every exit, but across many groups the notices scroll away, and Past members only reaches back 60 days, one group at a time. A single leave means little. A run of leaves in the hours after a post is feedback: too many posts, the wrong hour, or content the group didn't sign up for.
Three habits help. Post at each group's busiest hours rather than one time for all. Put the rules and the posting rhythm in the group description, so people know what they joined; group rules examples has wording to adapt. And compare membership week by week instead of trusting the head count on one day, as the group marketing guide explains. For groups on numbers connected to WavesFlo, the membership timeline is rebuilt from joins and leaves, and a group.participant_left webhook can log every exit in your own systems. Permissions that cut noise, such as admin-only posting, are covered in WhatsApp group admin settings.
Questions
Will members know if I leave a WhatsApp group?
They won't be notified. Only admins see that you left, but any member who opens the Past members list in Group info can see your name and number for up to 60 days, as of October 2026.
Can I leave a WhatsApp group without the admin knowing?
No. Admins are always shown that you left, and WhatsApp has no setting to hide it. Muting or archiving the group are the options nobody is told about.
Does muting a WhatsApp group notify anyone?
No. Nobody is told you muted the group. Mentions and replies to your messages can still notify you, and read receipts are still sent when you open the chat, because they can't be turned off in groups.
If I leave a WhatsApp community, do I leave its groups?
Yes. Leaving a community takes you out of its announcement group and every group you're in within it. To keep the groups but hide the noise, archive or mute them instead.
Can I rejoin a WhatsApp group after leaving?
Yes, if an admin re-adds you or someone sends you the invite link. As of October 2026, after a second exit there is a 24-hour wait before you can be re-added, rising with each exit up to 81 days; a link avoids it.
