How to dissolve a WhatsApp group as an admin, step by step

WhatsApp has no single button to dissolve a group. As an admin you remove every member, exit the group, then delete it. Each person keeps their copy of the chat, but nobody can post in it again. If the group's creator is still in, no other admin can empty the group, because the creator cannot be removed.
What are the steps?
- Open the group and tap its name to open Group info.
- Tap a member, then Remove and OK. Repeat until only you are left, other admins included.
- Tap Exit group. You may see Report group; use it only for spam, scams or abuse.
- Choose Exit group to keep the history, or Exit and delete for me to erase it.
- If you kept the history, open Group info and tap Delete group, then confirm.
What if you are not the creator?
Check whether the creator is still in the group. Ask them to leave, or to delete the group themselves. If they have already left, any admin can remove the rest.
What if you only want it to stop?
- Switch Send new messages off in Group permissions, so only admins can post. The group stays, but quietly.
- Rename it, for example 'Archive: [name]', and archive it.
- Post a closing message with the date, then remove members.
- Unlink it from a community if it is part of one, and it carries on as an ordinary group.
What do members keep?
Removed members are listed under Past members for up to 60 days. A deleted group cannot be restored, and WhatsApp cannot recover its history. If a message was sent by mistake, delete that message for everyone instead; an admin can do this for about two days after it was sent.
