You can add someone to a WhatsApp group without saving their number. As of October 2026, on Android or iPhone, tap Add members and type their number. Or send the group's invite link or QR code; on WhatsApp Web, use the link. If their privacy settings block you, WhatsApp offers a private invite, valid for three days.
This guide gives the steps for each method, then covers sharing a link without losing control of who joins, resetting a link that has leaked, making every join a request with Approve new members, what it means when WhatsApp couldn't add someone, and why adding people who never asked can get your number restricted. Menu names match WhatsApp's help centre as of October 2026.
How do you add someone to a WhatsApp group without saving their number?
- Open the group chat and tap the group name to open Group info.
- Tap + Add members.
- Type the person's phone number into the search box and select the number when it appears.
- Confirm with the tick on Android, or tap Add on iPhone.
- Tap Add to group.
Admins can always do this. Other members can only if an admin has left Add other members switched on in Group permissions, which is the default for groups started with fewer than 33 members. When you add someone directly, WhatsApp may offer to send message history: as of October 2026, its help centre says you can send all available pinned messages and up to 100 recent messages, and its add-members article limits those to the last 14 days. Someone who joins through an invite link can be sent history afterwards, from a Send message history option in the chat; what new members can see covers both.
The same idea works for one-to-one chats: message someone without saving their number covers click-to-chat links.
How do you create a WhatsApp group invite link or QR code?
- Open the group chat and tap the group name.
- Tap Invite via link or QR code.
- Pick how to send it: Send link via WhatsApp, Copy link, Share link for any other app, Share to my status, Send link via SMS or Send link via email.
- Tap QR code for a scannable version of the same link, for a poster, a shop counter or an event desk.
| Platform | Add by typing a number | Invite link | QR code |
|---|---|---|---|
| Android | Group info → + Add members | Group info → Invite via link or QR code | Same screen → QR code |
| iPhone | Group info → + Add members | Group info → Invite via link or QR code | Same screen → QR code |
| WhatsApp Web | Saved contacts only, per WhatsApp's instructions | Group info → Invite to group via link, then Send link via WhatsApp or Copy link | Use your phone |
Admins can always create the link. Members can too in groups started with fewer than 33 members, or wherever an admin allows it in Group permissions; WhatsApp's help centre names that switch Invite via group link or QR code in one article and Add other members in another, so look for either. Privacy settings never block a link: joining through one is always the other person's choice.
How to share a group link without losing control
- Send it one to one where you can. WhatsApp's own warning is that anyone with a group link can join your group and forward the link to other people.
- Remember what joining reveals. WhatsApp's help centre says members' phone numbers can't be hidden in a group, so a link posted publicly hands every member's number to whoever taps it.
- Turn on Approve new members before the link goes anywhere you don't control: a website, a flyer, a social post or someone else's group.
- In larger groups, switch member link sharing off in Group permissions, so only admins decide where the link goes.
- Treat a printed QR code as a public link. A photo of a poster travels as far as the link itself.
- Reset the link after each event, season or change of staff, so old copies stop working.
How do you reset a WhatsApp group link that has leaked?
- Open the group chat and tap the group name.
- Tap Invite via link or QR code. On WhatsApp Web, click Invite to group via link.
- Tap Reset link, then Reset link again to confirm. On Android, tap OK.
Only admins can reset a link. The old link, and every QR code made from it, stops working straight away and can't be restored. Anyone who taps it is told they can't join because the invite link was reset, and has to ask an admin. Resetting doesn't remove people who already joined through the old link, so check the member list and remove anyone who shouldn't be there.
Turn on Approve new members so a link can't be abused
Approve new members is off by default, so anyone holding the link walks straight in. Switched on, it turns every link, QR code and member invitation into a request that an admin has to accept.
- Open the group chat and tap the group name.
- Tap Group permissions.
- Turn on Approve new members.
People who tap the link then see "An admin must approve your request" above a Request to join button, and can cancel while they wait. Admins get a banner in the chat: tap Review to open Pending requests. Each request shows its source, such as the invite link, a QR code or the member who invited them, and you can tap the person to see their profile or message them before you approve or dismiss. Every other switch is covered in WhatsApp group admin settings, explained.
Why does WhatsApp say it couldn't add a participant?
| What happens | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A pop-up says you can't add them | Their Groups privacy is set to My contacts and you aren't one, or to My contacts except… with you excluded | Tap Invite to group (or Continue), then send. They get a private invite in a one-to-one chat and have three days to accept it |
| Someone who left can't be re-added | They have left the group twice. WhatsApp then makes everyone wait 24 hours, and longer after each exit, up to 81 days | Send them the invite link, which skips the wait |
| The group won't take anyone | It has reached 1,024 members (the cap as of October 2026), or only admins can add people | Remove inactive members, or ask an admin |
| An error after adding many people | You have added too many members in a short time | Wait. WhatsApp says it can take 24 hours before you can add more |
| "Your account is restricted right now" | Recent activity looked like spam or bulk messaging | Wait for the restriction to end; a restricted account can't add new members to groups |
If a private invite runs out unanswered, an admin can send it again. On Android, Group info → Manage invites lists pending and expired invites, with Remind and Resend. On iPhone, pending invites appear under Invites in Group info. The member cap and the other numbers are in WhatsApp group limits.
Why adding strangers in bulk backfires
WhatsApp's guidance is plain: get permission before you add someone to a group, honour it if they remove themselves, and never add people from contact lists that aren't yours. Adding numbers that never asked runs into three mechanisms:
- A safety screen first. When someone who isn't in a person's contacts adds them, WhatsApp shows who added them, when the group was created, how many members it has and whether any are their contacts. Notifications stay muted until they tap Stay, and Exit group is one tap away.
- Reports. Reporting a group sends WhatsApp up to five of the last messages sent to you in it, and nobody in the group is told. WhatsApp says it uses reports from users alongside machine learning to find and ban accounts that send unwanted automated messages.
- Limits and restrictions. Adding too many people at once earns an error and a wait. A restricted account can't add new members to groups, create groups, start chats with new contacts or use linked devices until the restriction ends. WhatsApp doesn't publish the thresholds.
An invite link avoids all three, because each person decides to join. A group built from people who tapped a link starts smaller, but nobody in it was put there against their will. If a number has already been limited, what a restricted account can and can't do covers the next steps.
Growing many groups without adding anyone
Running dozens of groups turns invitations into a routine: one link per group, approvals switched on, links reset after each drive. WavesFlo doesn't add members or create groups; it works with the groups your connected numbers already belong to.
Questions
Can I add someone to a WhatsApp group if they're not in my contacts?
Yes. On Android and iPhone, tap + Add members in the group and type their number. If their privacy settings only let contacts add them, WhatsApp offers to send a private invite instead.
Do WhatsApp group invite links expire?
Not on a timer. A group invite link keeps working until an admin resets it. The private invite WhatsApp sends when privacy settings block a direct add is different: as of October 2026, it expires after three days.
Who can share a WhatsApp group link?
Admins always can. As of October 2026, in groups started with fewer than 33 members every member can by default, and admins can switch member sharing on or off in Group permissions.
What happens to people who joined before I reset the link?
They stay in the group. Resetting only stops the old link and its QR code from letting anyone new in.
Can people who join through a link see my phone number?
Yes. In an ordinary WhatsApp group, members can see each other's phone numbers, which is why a link posted publicly should always have Approve new members turned on.
Why can't I re-add someone who left the group?
If they have left twice, WhatsApp makes you wait 24 hours before re-adding them, and the wait grows with each exit up to 81 days, as of October 2026. Sending them the invite link avoids the wait.
