No, not by default. A new member of a WhatsApp group sees only the messages sent after they joined. Since February 2026, an admin or member can choose to send them up to 100 recent messages, plus the group's pinned messages, as message history. Admins can always do this; members can too, unless an admin has switched it off.
This guide explains why old messages don't reach new members, how message history works on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web, what it leaves out, what to use where it isn't available, the privacy questions admins should settle first, and a checklist for bringing someone up to speed.
Why can't new members see old messages in a WhatsApp group?
Group chats live on members' phones, not on WhatsApp's servers. WhatsApp's privacy policy says messages are stored on your device and deleted from its servers once they are delivered. A group message is delivered to whoever is in the group when it is sent, so someone who joins later has nothing to download, and WhatsApp has no archive to hand over.
Pins work the same way: WhatsApp's help centre says people who join a group after a pinned message was sent can't see it. Until 2026, catching someone up meant screenshots or forwarded messages, the two habits WhatsApp said message history would replace.
How does WhatsApp group message history work?
WhatsApp announced Group Message History on 19 February 2026 and rolled it out gradually. This is how its blog and help centre describe it, as of October 2026:
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Who can send it | Admins, always. Members too, unless an admin turns off Send message history. |
| How much | From 25 up to 100 recent messages, plus all available pinned messages. |
| When | While adding someone, or just after they join, including by invite link. |
| Who is told | The new member gets a notification. Everyone else sees a system message, with timestamps and sender information. |
| How it looks | Visually distinct from regular messages, so nobody mistakes it for new conversation. |
| Encryption | End-to-end encrypted, like other personal messages. |
| Devices | The help centre gives steps for Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web. |
How far back does it reach? WhatsApp's help centre, checked on 5 October 2026, gives a cap of 100 recent messages plus pinned messages and states no time window.
How do you share chat history with a new member?
- Open the group and tap the group name.
- Tap Add, then search for or select the people to add.
- Turn on Message history. Optionally, choose how many recent messages to send; on iPhone, tap Done.
- Tap Add members, then Continue.
On WhatsApp Web the flow is the same: click the group name, then Group info, then Add member or Add participants; turn on Message history, then click Add members and Continue.
If someone joins by invite link, existing members see a Send message history option in the chat. Tap it, optionally choose how many messages, and tap Send. Invite links, QR codes and join approvals covers the ways people arrive.
Who can send message history, and can admins turn it off?
Admins can always send message history. Members can send it when they add someone, which they can only do if admins let members add others, and admins can take the option away. To change it:
- Tap the group name.
- Tap Group permissions.
- Turn Send message history off or on.
The switch is there when members are allowed to add others to the group. With it off, members don't see the option when adding someone; admins still do. Every admin control covers the rest of Group permissions.
What message history leaves out
- Messages that have already disappeared, if disappearing messages is on.
- Live location, view once messages and business transactions.
- Anything older than the most recent 100 messages, apart from pinned messages.
Nothing is automatic either. WhatsApp describes sending history as an action someone has to take, so a newcomer nobody sends it to still starts with an empty chat.
When message history isn't available
If the option is missing, update WhatsApp first; the rollout was gradual. If it is switched off in your group, or you'd rather not share conversation, these work instead:
- The group description. It sits in Group info, where someone who joined a minute ago can read it, and holds up to 2,048 characters: enough for the group's purpose, rules, key links and who the admins are. See description ideas.
- A fresh pinned message. A pin on a message sent before someone joined stays invisible to them, even if it is pinned later, so post a short start-here message after they join and pin it. As of October 2026 WhatsApp's help centre allows up to four pins per chat (some app versions still stop at three), each lasting 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days, and admins decide whether members can pin with Edit group settings in Group permissions.
- Forwarding. For the two or three messages that matter, forward them to the newcomer in a private chat. Each arrives labelled as forwarded, without the discussion around it.
- Exporting the chat, with care. On Android, open the group, tap More options, then More, then Export chat; on iPhone, tap the group name, then Export chat. You choose with or without media. If an admin has turned on Restricted chat or Advanced chat privacy, nobody in the group can export it. The result is a text file (a ZIP on iPhone) that can't be imported back into WhatsApp, can't be made from WhatsApp Web and leaves out view once messages. With media, only the most recent media is attached, and the help centre gives no message limit. Once exported, the file is outside WhatsApp's encryption: whoever receives it can read it and pass it on.
Privacy questions to settle before you share
- Sharing is never silent. A system message tells the whole group that history went to the new member.
- You answer for what you send. WhatsApp's help centre says that if the new member reports content from history you sent, you are reported, not the original sender. Read what you are about to share.
- Members wrote for the people present. In support, health, money or parent groups, turn Send message history off for members and let admins decide case by case.
- Send the smallest count that does the job. In a busy group, 100 messages may be a single afternoon.
- Say it in the rules. One line in the description, for example that new members receive the last 25 messages, means nobody is surprised.
Checklist: bringing a new member up to speed
- Check the description is current: purpose, rules, links, admin names.
- Keep one start-here message pinned. Pinned messages travel with message history.
- Add the person with Message history on, set to the smallest count that covers the current topic.
- If they joined by link, tap Send message history in the chat.
- Post a short welcome that points to the description and says where questions go. See welcome message examples.
- Where history is off, re-post and pin the start-here message after new people join.
Welcome to [group name]. Start here:
1. Tap the group name and read the description. Rules and links are there.
2. The recent messages above were shared so you can catch up.
3. Timetable, fees and forms: [link]
4. Questions for the admins: message [admin name] directly.
5. Please keep posts to [topic].Onboarding across many groups
With a dozen groups, the hard part is noticing who joined. WavesFlo rebuilds each group's membership timeline from joins and leaves, and for developers emits a signed group.participant_joined webhook event, so a person on your team can be prompted to send history and the start-here note. It does not send welcome messages or message history itself; someone still does that in WhatsApp. Webhooks and n8n shows how to route the event.
Questions
How many old messages can you share with a new WhatsApp group member?
Up to 100 recent messages as of October 2026; WhatsApp's blog says you choose from 25 up to 100. All available pinned messages are sent with them.
Does the group know when message history is shared?
Yes. The new member gets a notification, and everyone in the group sees a system message saying history was sent to them.
Can admins stop members from sharing message history?
Yes. In Group permissions, admins can turn off Send message history. Members then don't see the option when adding someone, while admins can still send it.
Can I send history to someone who joined through an invite link?
Yes. When someone joins by invite link, existing members see a Send message history option in the chat.
Why don't I see the Message history option?
Update WhatsApp first, because the feature rolled out gradually from February 2026. If you aren't an admin, an admin may have turned Send message history off, or only admins may be allowed to add members.
Is shared message history encrypted?
Yes. WhatsApp says message history is end-to-end encrypted like other personal messages, so no one outside the group, not even WhatsApp, can read it.
