A WhatsApp group description holds up to 2,048 characters and sits in Group info, visible to every member, however recently they joined. Any member can edit it unless an admin turns off Edit group settings in Group permissions; groups over 256 members default to admins only. Use it for the group's purpose, rules, posting hours and contacts.
This page covers the limit, who can edit, the steps on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web, what to put in a description and how formatting behaves there. Then come ten ready-to-copy descriptions, four for business groups and six for community, school and professional ones, and a short guide to group names, which have their own 100-character limit.
How long can a WhatsApp group description be?
2,048 characters. WhatsApp raised the limit from 512 in early 2023, when group names also went from 25 characters to 100. That is room for a full set of rules, but aim for 400 to 900 characters, about one phone screen, so people read to the end.
| Item | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Group description | 2,048 characters | Raised from 512 in 2023 |
| Group name | 100 characters | Raised from 25 in 2023 |
| Member tag | One per member, per group | Added in January 2026; each member sets their own |
| Pinned messages | Up to 4 per chat | WhatsApp's help centre, October 2026; some app versions still allow three. A pin lasts up to 30 days |
| Members | 1,024 per group | The rest are in WhatsApp group limits |
Who can edit a WhatsApp group description?
One switch decides. In Group info → Group permissions, Edit group settings controls whether members or only admins can change the group's name, icon and description, and pin messages. By default any member can edit the description, except in groups of more than 256 members, where the switch defaults to Only admins.
Turn it off in any group whose description carries rules, prices or links. While it is on, any member can rewrite the rules or swap in a different payment link. Every switch on that screen is explained in WhatsApp group admin settings.
How to add a description in a WhatsApp group
These steps follow WhatsApp's help centre as of October 2026. If the description can't be edited, an admin has limited Edit group settings to admins. On Android:
- Open the group and tap its name at the top. Or tap and hold the group in the Chats tab, then More options (three dots) → Group info.
- Tap the current description, or Add group description if there isn't one.
- Type or paste the text, then tap OK.
On iPhone:
- Open the group and tap its name at the top.
- Tap the existing description, or Add group description.
- Type or paste the text, then tap Save.
On WhatsApp Web:
- Open the group and click its name, or click More options (three dots) → Group info.
- Click the pencil icon next to the group description.
- Type or paste the text, then click the tick to save.
What to put in a WhatsApp group description
Write for the person who joined five minutes ago. The description sits in Group info, the first place a newcomer looks to find out what the group is for. In order of importance:
- Purpose, in the first line: who the group serves and what arrives in it, such as "Offers and restock alerts from [Shop], Pune".
- Rhythm: how often you post and when. "One or two posts a day, 10 am to 7 pm" answers the question every newcomer has.
- The rules that matter, in three to six lines. The description is the one text a new member is sure to be able to read, so it is where rules belong; the group rules examples fit inside the limit.
- Admins, by name and role. Members can open Group info and tap an admin's name to message them, so a list of numbers isn't needed.
- Where to go instead. Orders, fees, complaints and doubts usually belong somewhere other than the group, so say where.
- Links members need, such as a price list, a form or a timetable.
- A last-updated date, so members can tell the rules are current.
Leave out anything that changes weekly, such as this week's offer or timetable; that is what messages are for. Keep the welcome separate, too: a welcome message greets people once, while the description is the reference they come back to.
Does bold or italic work in a group description?
WhatsApp documents formatting for messages: asterisks for bold, underscores for italic, tildes for strikethrough, three backticks for monospace, and a hyphen or a number at the start of a line for lists. Its help centre doesn't say whether descriptions render any of it, so don't rely on it. Write a description that reads well as plain text: a short first line, one point per line, a hyphen before each point, and capitals only for short section labels such as RULES.
Emojis are allowed: the description editor on Android and WhatsApp Web has an emoji button. Use them as markers at most. A description that is half symbols is slow to scan and awkward for screen readers, which read each one out by name.
Where you do want bold headings, use them in the pinned copy of the rules, which is a message. The WhatsApp text formatter previews bold, italic, strikethrough and monospace before you paste.

Admins: [name], [name] | Join requests approved within [2 days]Group name ideas that work
A group name can run to 100 characters, but only the start fits in the chat list, so put the words that tell groups apart first. A pattern that holds up is who or what, then where or when:
| Group type | Name that works | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Residents | [Society] B-Wing Residents | Society and wing first, so neighbours spot it in a long chat list |
| School parents | Class 4B Parents 2026-27 | The year stops next year's parents joining last year's group |
| Customers | [Shop] Deals, Pune | Brand first, then what arrives, then the city if you run several |
| Coaching | JEE 2027 Batch B, [Institute] | Students in more than one batch can tell the groups apart at a glance |
| Dealers | [Brand] Dealers, Gujarat | One group per region, and the name says which |
Avoid names that look like spam. WhatsApp's help centre says it looks at basic group information, such as the name and photo, when checking whether a group breaks its Terms of Service, and a suspended group can only be reviewed at an admin's request. So skip all capitals, strings of emoji and promises like FREE or EARN DAILY: a name should describe the group, not sell it.
Anyone can rename the group while Edit group settings is on, so turn it off once the name is right.
Keeping descriptions current across many groups
With twenty groups, descriptions drift: one still lists last term's timetable, another names an admin who left. Keep a master description for each group type in one document, dated, and update every copy the same day. Managing many WhatsApp groups covers the rest of the routine.
Names matter even more at that scale. When you choose target groups for a WavesFlo campaign, you pick from every group your connected numbers belong to, and a consistent pattern of brand, type and region is what makes choosing the right twelve out of eighty quick. WavesFlo doesn't edit names or descriptions; those stay in WhatsApp.
Questions
What is the character limit for a WhatsApp group description?
2,048 characters as of October 2026, raised from 512 in 2023. The group name can be up to 100 characters.
Why can't I edit the group description?
An admin has turned off Edit group settings in Group permissions, so only admins can change the name, icon and description. As of October 2026, groups with more than 256 members default to that.
Can new members see the group description?
Yes. It sits in Group info, so every member can read it whenever they joined. Pins are different: a pin on a message sent before someone joined isn't visible to them, unless someone sends them message history, which includes pinned messages.
Can I use emojis in a WhatsApp group description?
Yes. The description editor has an emoji button on Android and WhatsApp Web, and the iPhone keyboard's emoji work too. Use a few as markers so the text stays easy to scan.
What should a business WhatsApp group description include?
What members get and how often, your posting hours, how to order or ask a question, the main rules, the admins by name, and a last-updated date.
