To send a photo on WhatsApp without compression, send it as a document: open the chat, tap the attach icon, choose Document and pick the photo. It goes as the file itself, up to 2 GB, rather than a compressed copy. HD quality is the quicker option and shows as a normal photo, but it's still compressed.
Sending as a document matters when the detail does: floor plans for a buyer in Pune, product shots for a reseller's catalogue, a scanned agreement that has to stay legible, or wedding photos the family wants to print. This guide compares the three ways WhatsApp can send a photo, gives the steps on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web, and lists the size limits as of October 2026.
HD or document: which keeps more quality?
WhatsApp's help centre says media is usually compressed when it's shared, so a photo can arrive at lower quality than the original. HD reduces that loss. A document avoids it, because WhatsApp sends the file you picked rather than a copy prepared for the chat.
| What you get | Standard quality | HD quality | Document |
|---|---|---|---|
| Quality | Compressed to send quickly | Sharper, but still a compressed copy | The original file, unchanged |
| In the chat | A normal photo | A normal photo | A file the recipient taps to open |
| Size limit | Set by WhatsApp's media limits | Set by WhatsApp's media limits | 2 GB per file |
| Status and profile photo | Yes | Not available | No |
| Best for | Everyday sharing | Photos people will look at in the chat | Printing, editing, zooming and keeping records |
In practice, use HD for the holiday photos the family will scroll through, and a document whenever someone will print, edit, crop or file the picture. A document also carries the file's own details, which can include where the photo was taken if your camera saves location, so think about that before sending originals to people you don't know.
How to send a photo as a document on Android
- Open the chat and tap the attach icon, the paperclip, in the message bar.
- Tap Document.
- Browse to the photo. Photos taken on the phone are usually in the DCIM or Pictures folder; open the file browser if the list only shows recent documents.
- Select the photo and tap Send when asked.
The same steps send a video as a document, which is the way to share a clip that is too long or too large for WhatsApp's video limit, up to 2 GB.
How to send a photo as a document on iPhone
- Open the chat and tap + beside the message box.
- Tap Document.
- Pick the photo: from your photo library if the menu offers it, otherwise from the Files app, iCloud Drive or another source such as Google Drive.
- Tap Send.
If a photo lives only in the Photos app and the Document menu shows just files, save it to Files first: open the photo in Photos, tap Share, then Save to Files. It then appears in the Document picker like any other file.
How to send a photo as a document on WhatsApp Web
- Open the chat and click the attach icon.
- Click Document, not Photos & videos.
- Choose the image file on your computer and send it.
Photos & videos on WhatsApp Web sends up to 100 photos or videos at once as normal media, with the same Standard or HD choice: click the HD icon, pick a quality, then Done.
How do you send HD photos and make HD the default?
HD is the better choice when you want the photo to open straight in the chat. It isn't available for status updates or profile pictures.
- Open the chat, tap the attach icon and choose photos or videos from your gallery or Photos.
- Tap the HD icon at the top of the editing screen and choose HD quality.
- Add a caption if you like and tap Send. On mobile data WhatsApp may ask "Continue without WiFi?"; tap Continue to send anyway.
To use HD every time, go to Settings → Storage and data → Media upload quality and choose HD quality; you can still switch one send back to Standard quality from the HD icon. You can't upgrade a photo you've already sent, but you can send it again in HD. And HD is only as good as the connection: on a weak signal, a photo can still arrive at lower quality.
What are WhatsApp's file size limits?
| What | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Document, including photos and videos sent as files | 2 GB | The same on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web |
| Video sent as media | 100 MB at 720p | The default on a faster connection; 64 MB at 480p on a slower one |
| Photos or videos in one send | Up to 100 | WhatsApp's figure for the Android gallery picker and WhatsApp Web |
| Status video | 90 seconds | HD isn't available for status updates |
| Video formats | 3GP, AVI, FLV, MKV, MOV, MP4 | The formats WhatsApp lists as supported |
| Profile photo | At least 192 × 192 pixels suggested | Smaller images look blurry; HD isn't available |
A video that's too long or too large to send as media can be trimmed before sending, or sent as a document instead. Group-specific caps, such as members and admins, are in WhatsApp group limits. If you reply to customers from a shared inbox such as WavesFlo, attachments there are capped at 16 MB each, so send large originals from the phone.
What happens when you send a photo as a document?
- A document shows in the chat as a file rather than a photo. They tap it to open it in their phone's viewer and can save it from there.
- Whether it downloads automatically depends on their own auto-download settings, which handle documents separately from photos and videos, for Wi-Fi and for mobile data.
- Forwarding passes the same file on without uploading it again, and the usual forwarding limits apply.
- Size is everyone's problem in a group: a 1 GB video sent as a document is a 1 GB download for each member who opens it.
If photos you receive never reach your gallery, see WhatsApp images not showing. Originals are also large, so they fill a phone quickly; WhatsApp storage full covers clearing them chat by chat.
Questions
Does sending a photo as a document keep its original quality on WhatsApp?
Yes. A document is sent as the file itself, so the photo keeps its original resolution and file size, up to 2 GB per file as of October 2026. Photos sent the normal way, even in HD, are compressed copies.
Is WhatsApp HD the same as original quality?
No. HD sends a sharper version than standard quality, but it is still compressed, and a weak connection can lower it further. To send the untouched original, send the photo as a document.
What is the maximum file size on WhatsApp?
2 GB for a document, on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web, as of October 2026. Videos sent as normal media have a default limit of 100 MB at 720p on a faster connection, or 64 MB at 480p on a slower one.
How do I make WhatsApp always send HD photos?
Go to Settings → Storage and data → Media upload quality and choose HD quality. You can still pick Standard quality for a single send from the HD icon on the editing screen. HD isn't available for status updates or profile pictures.
Can I send a video as a document on WhatsApp?
Yes. Tap the attach icon, choose Document and pick the video. It goes as the original file, up to 2 GB as of October 2026, which is the way to share a clip that is too long or too large to send as normal video.
Why does my photo look blurry after sending it on WhatsApp?
Normal photo sends are compressed, and a weak connection lowers quality further. Send it again in HD, or as a document for the original file. A blurry photo in an older chat can also mean the file was deleted from your phone.
