To free up WhatsApp storage, open Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage. Delete the large files and the ones forwarded many times first, then clear the media from your busiest chats. To stop the problem coming back, limit media auto-download and stop WhatsApp saving every photo to your phone's gallery.

Below: finding what takes the space, deleting in bulk without losing messages, what each clean-up option removes, and the settings that keep space free. Steps are for Android and iPhone as of October 2026, with WhatsApp Web where it differs.

Back up first. WhatsApp recommends a backup before you delete anything, because most of what follows is permanent: a file deleted this way can't be downloaded again from its chat. How to back up WhatsApp chats walks through it on Android and iPhone.

How do I see what is using WhatsApp storage?

  1. Android: open WhatsApp and tap More options (the three dots) > Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage.
  2. iPhone: tap Settings or your profile picture, then Storage and data > Manage storage.
  3. Check the top of the screen, which shows how much space WhatsApp takes up on the phone.
  4. From there, review large files and files forwarded many times, or open any chat or channel to see its files.

For one conversation, open the chat, tap its name, then Manage storage, which WhatsApp added in March 2026. It shows how much space that chat's media takes, largest files first, so a family group full of wedding videos can be cleaned without touching anything else.

The figures may not match. WhatsApp says its storage number can differ from the one your phone reports, because the two calculate it differently. For the phone's view, go to Settings > General > iPhone Storage on an iPhone, or Settings > Storage on Android. Both list apps by the space they use.

How do I delete large and forwarded files in bulk?

  1. In Manage storage, pick a chat or channel. Search helps if the list is long.
  2. Sort by Newest, Oldest or Largest. Each file shows its size in the corner.
  3. Android: tap and hold a file, tap more files to add them, or tap Select all. iPhone: tap Select, then the files, or Select all.
  4. Tap the bin icon.
  5. Decide about copies and starred items. On Android, tick Delete any copies to remove duplicates as well. On iPhone, choose Delete all except starred if you starred anything worth keeping, or Delete items and any copies.
  6. Tap Delete.

Before you tap Delete: it is permanent, since you can't download the file again from its chat. It affects only you, since everyone else keeps their copy. And it may not free all the space, because a copy in your gallery or Photos, or the same file in another chat, stays until you delete that too.

Files forwarded many times are usually the easiest to let go: good-morning images, viral clips, the same sale poster passed round five groups. WhatsApp gives a message that label once it has travelled through a chain of five or more chats, as the guide to the WhatsApp forward limit explains.

How do I clear a chat's media but keep the messages?

Clearing only the media removes the files and leaves the conversation readable, which is what most people want from a busy group. WhatsApp added the media-only choice in March 2026.

  1. Android: open the chat and tap More options > More > Clear chat. Choose Clear media files.
  2. iPhone: on the Chats tab, tap and hold the chat, tap Clear chat, then choose Clear all media.
  3. Tick the types to remove: Videos and GIFs, Photos, Stickers, Documents and Audio.
  4. Decide whether to clear starred messages too, then tap Clear media.

To empty a chat completely, messages included: on Android, More options > More > Clear chat > Clear chat, ticking Also delete media received in this chat from the device gallery to remove gallery copies too; on iPhone, tap the chat's name, then Clear chat > Clear all messages. For every chat at once, use Settings > Chats > Chat history > Clear all chats on Android, or Settings > Chats > Clear all chats on iPhone.

A cleared chat stays in your list, and you stay in the group. The messages come back only from a backup made before you cleared them, losing anything newer; restoring a WhatsApp backup explains the trade-off.

On WhatsApp Web, the Media view in the left-hand menu gathers the documents, links and media you received across all chats in the past 14 days. Sort it by largest file and delete a batch at once. WhatsApp syncs deletions across your devices, so treat it exactly like deleting on the phone.

Which clean-up option removes what?

WhatsApp's clean-up options compared, as of October 2026
OptionWhere to find itWhat it removesWhat stays
Manage storageSettings > Storage and dataThe files you select, in any chat or channel, and their copies if you chooseEvery message, and other people's copies
A chat's Manage storageTap the chat's nameFiles you select from that chat, largest firstThe chat's messages
Clear media files (Android) or Clear all media (iPhone)Clear chat, from the chatThe media types you tick, plus starred items if you chooseThe messages
Clear chatThe chat's menu or nameEvery message and file in that chatThe chat in your list, and your place in a group

Archiving isn't on the list because it frees nothing. WhatsApp's help centre is clear that archiving a chat doesn't delete it or back it up; it only hides it from the main list. More on that in how archiving works.

How do I stop WhatsApp filling the phone again?

Deleting buys time. These settings stop the space disappearing again:

  • Media auto-download. Android: Settings > Storage and data, then under Media auto-download open When using mobile data, When connected on Wi-Fi and When roaming, and untick at least videos and documents. iPhone: Settings > Storage and data, then set each type to Never or Wi-Fi. Skipped files still download when you tap them. On WhatsApp Web, the choices are under Settings > Chats > Media auto-download.
  • Save to Photos on iPhone. With it on (Settings > Chats), incoming photos and videos are also copied into your Photos library, and that copy stays after you delete the file in WhatsApp. Turn it off, or set one noisy group to Never from its Group info.
  • Media visibility on Android. The matching switch is Settings > Chats > Media visibility, or per chat in Contact info or Group info. Turning it off keeps WhatsApp files out of your gallery; if photos then seem to vanish, see WhatsApp images not showing.
  • Disappearing messages. Settings > Privacy > Default message timer sets 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days for new chats, and each chat has its own setting. Media sent while it is on disappears with the messages and isn't saved to your Photos. Only new messages are affected.
  • Status archive. WhatsApp is rolling out an archive that keeps your own statuses on the phone after they expire, counted in WhatsApp's storage. It is on by default; turn it off under Settings > Storage and data > Status archive.
  • Big documents. A document can be up to 2 GB, so files sent as documents often top the Largest sort. Sending photos as documents covers when that format is worth the space.

Will clearing WhatsApp's cache delete my chats?

No. On Android, WhatsApp's help centre suggests clearing the cache when the app misbehaves, under the phone's Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage > Clear cache, and says this won't delete your messages or chats. The button beside it is a different matter: Clear storage, called Clear data on some phones, permanently deletes all of an app's data, Google warns. For WhatsApp that means every chat not in a backup. Leave it alone unless you have a fresh backup and mean to start again.

An iPhone has no cache button. Settings > General > iPhone Storage offers to offload or delete WhatsApp, and deleting removes its data too, so stick to WhatsApp's own tools unless you have a backup.

When storage runs critically low, WhatsApp may stop working properly and ask you to free space. On a phone that holds a shop's or an agency's number, where GST invoices, product photos and site videos arrive all day, check Manage storage weekly rather than waiting for that prompt.

Questions

How do I free up WhatsApp storage without deleting chats?

Delete files, not messages. Use Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage to remove selected files, or open a chat's Clear chat option and choose Clear media files on Android or Clear all media on iPhone. Both keep every message.

Does deleting media in WhatsApp delete it for everyone?

No. Deleting from Manage storage or clearing a chat removes only your copy. Everyone else in the chat keeps theirs, and you can't download the file again from that chat.

Why is WhatsApp still using space after I deleted media?

Copies can remain: files saved to your gallery or iPhone Photos, the same file in other chats, and archived statuses. WhatsApp's own figure can also differ from your phone's, because they are calculated differently.

Will clearing WhatsApp's cache delete my messages?

No. WhatsApp says clearing its cache on Android, under Settings > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage > Clear cache, won't delete messages or chats. The Clear storage button next to it permanently deletes all of the app's data.

How do I stop WhatsApp downloading photos and videos automatically?

Go to Settings > Storage and data > Media auto-download. On Android, untick media types for mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming; on iPhone, set each type to Never or Wi-Fi. You can still tap any file to download it.

Do disappearing messages save storage on WhatsApp?

They can. As of October 2026, disappearing messages can be set to 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days, and media sent while they are on disappears with the messages and isn't saved to your Photos. Messages sent before you turned them on stay.
