If WhatsApp photos aren't showing in your gallery, turn on Media visibility (Android) or Save to Photos (iPhone) in Settings → Chats, then check the same setting inside that chat. If photos won't download at all, check auto-download, your connection, free storage and WhatsApp's photo permission. View once photos, and photos in disappearing-message or locked chats, never save automatically.
Start by working out which problem you have: photos that open in the chat but never reach the gallery, or photos that won't download in the first place. The table maps each symptom to its usual cause, and the sections after it give the fixes for Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web. Menu names match WhatsApp's help centre as of October 2026.
Why aren't WhatsApp images showing?
| What you see | Usual cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Photos open in the chat but aren't in the gallery | Media visibility or Save to Photos is off, for every chat or just that one | Turn it on in Settings → Chats and in the chat's own info |
| No WhatsApp photos in the gallery at all (Android) | The photo permission is off, or a .nomedia file is hiding the WhatsApp Images folder | Allow Photos and videos; delete the .nomedia file |
| Photos won't download, or the download keeps failing | A weak connection, auto-download set to never, or a full phone | Tap to download, change network, free up space |
| Only some photos appear when you attach one (iPhone) | WhatsApp has Limited Access to your photo library | Choose Full Access in Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Photos |
| A photo in an older chat is blurry | The file was deleted from the phone, or it was sent on a weak connection | Keep saving on for the future; ask the sender to resend |
| Grey boxes or question marks after a restore (iPhone) | That media wasn't in the iCloud backup | It can't be recovered from that backup; ask for a resend |
| Nothing from one chat is ever saved | Disappearing messages, view once or a locked chat | Expected; save single items by hand where WhatsApp allows it |
How do I fix WhatsApp images not showing in the Android gallery?
- Turn on Media visibility for all chats: three-dot menu → Settings → Chats → Media visibility.
- Check the chat itself: open it, tap the contact or group name and tap Media visibility. Default follows your main setting, Yes always saves and No never saves. A choice made for one chat isn't changed by the main switch.
- Allow access to photos: phone Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Permissions → Photos and videos → Allow. For audio and documents, allow Music and audio and Files too. Depending on the phone, these may be called Storage or Files and media instead.
- If the permissions are on and media still won't save, turn the permission off and on again, restart the phone, then clear WhatsApp's cache under Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Storage → Clear cache. Don't tap Clear storage, which deletes the app's data.
- Look for a .nomedia file. A file with that name in the WhatsApp Images folder hides every WhatsApp photo from the gallery; delete it with a file manager and they appear again.
Then check the phone has room. Settings → Storage shows what's using space, and WhatsApp's Settings → Storage and data → Manage storage lists the biggest files by chat; WhatsApp storage full goes through what to delete first. If WhatsApp media goes to an SD card, make sure the card has free space and isn't in read-only mode; a corrupted card may need reformatting or replacing.
Busy family and housing-society groups can fill a phone quickly with greetings and forwards. Setting Media visibility to No for those groups keeps them out of the gallery while photos from the chats you care about still save.
How do I fix WhatsApp photos not saving on iPhone?
- Turn on Save to Photos: Settings or your profile picture → Chats → Save to Photos. Some versions call it Save to Camera Roll.
- Check the chat: tap the contact or group name, tap Save to Photos and choose Default or Always. Never stops that chat saving even when the main switch is on.
- Give WhatsApp Full Access to your library: iPhone Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Photos → Full Access. With Limited Access, WhatsApp sees only the photos you picked.
- Save one photo by hand: tap and hold it in the chat, then tap Save.
- Still stuck: restart the iPhone, force quit WhatsApp and update it from the App Store.
If WhatsApp has no Photos entry in the iPhone's Settings, it hasn't asked for access yet: send a photo from WhatsApp and the iPhone will prompt you to allow it.
Why won't WhatsApp photos download?
A weak connection is the most common reason, WhatsApp's help centre says; auto-download set to Never, a full phone or a missing permission are other common causes. If you see a download arrow or a faint preview instead of the photo, WhatsApp hasn't fetched it yet. Tap it to download it by hand, then work through these:
- Auto-download. Settings → Storage and data → Media auto-download. Android has separate choices for mobile data, Wi-Fi and roaming; iPhone offers Never, Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi and cellular for each type of media. On Never, nothing downloads until you tap it.
- Connection. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data, turn flight mode on and off, turn Data saver off on Android, and try another network if office or college Wi-Fi is blocking WhatsApp.
- Storage. WhatsApp may not work properly when a phone is critically low on storage, so free some space before anything else.
- Date and time. Set both to automatic: on Android under Settings → System or General management → Date and time, on iPhone under Settings → General → Date & Time → Set Automatically. WhatsApp links a wrong clock to wrong message times, and a clock that's far out can upset secure connections as well.
- Updates. Update WhatsApp and the phone's software. If you see a "This file format is not supported" error, WhatsApp's help centre says to check you're on the latest version of WhatsApp.
- Age. WhatsApp says encrypted media may be kept on its servers for a few weeks after it's sent, so a photo you left undownloaded for months may be gone. Ask the sender to send it again.
Chats that never save photos to your gallery
Some photos are designed not to reach the gallery, whatever your settings:
- Disappearing messages. In a chat with disappearing messages on, media disappears with the messages and isn't saved to your photos.
- View once. View once photos and videos can't be saved, forwarded or screenshotted, and expire if they aren't opened within 14 days.
- Locked chats. You can't turn on Media visibility or Save to Photos for a locked chat, though you can still save items from it by hand.
Blurry photos, grey boxes and question marks
A blurry photo in an older chat usually means WhatsApp can no longer find the file on your phone, most often because it was deleted from the gallery or the SD card. Keeping Media visibility or Save to Photos on prevents it in future. Blur can also come from a weak connection when the photo was sent; ask for it again in HD or as a document, as explained in sending photos as documents.
On iPhone, question marks or blank boxes in Media, Links and Docs after a restore mean those files weren't properly saved in the iCloud backup, and WhatsApp says they can't be recovered from it. How to back up WhatsApp covers the settings that decide what a backup holds, and restoring a backup covers the restore itself.
Why aren't images loading on WhatsApp Web or desktop?
Usually the connection, which WhatsApp names as the most common cause: refresh the page, clear the browser's cache and cookies, or log out and link the device again, and on office networks let traffic to web.whatsapp.com and whatsapp.net through. A computer has no WhatsApp gallery. To keep a photo, click it, then click the download icon and Save if asked; where it lands depends on your browser or computer settings. Automatic downloads are under Settings → Chats → Media auto-download. WhatsApp Web keeps logging out covers the connection side.
Questions
Why are my WhatsApp images not showing in my gallery?
Usually because Media visibility (Android) or Save to Photos (iPhone) is off, either in Settings → Chats or in that chat's own settings. Photos also skip the gallery in chats with disappearing messages, in locked chats and when sent as view once.
How do I turn on media visibility in WhatsApp?
On Android, tap the three-dot menu, then Settings → Chats, and turn on Media visibility. For one chat, tap its name, then Media visibility, and choose Default or Yes. On iPhone the equivalent setting is Save to Photos, under Settings → Chats.
Why won't WhatsApp download photos?
A weak connection is the most common reason, as of October 2026. Also check auto-download under Settings → Storage and data, free storage on the phone and WhatsApp's photo permission. Photos left undownloaded for a long time may no longer be available, so ask the sender to resend.
Why can't WhatsApp see all my photos on iPhone?
WhatsApp probably has Limited Access to your photo library. Go to iPhone Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Photos and choose Full Access, so WhatsApp can see every photo instead of only the ones you picked.
Why are my WhatsApp photos blurry?
Either WhatsApp can't find the photo on your phone any more, usually because it was deleted, or it was sent over a weak connection. Keep Media visibility or Save to Photos on so future photos are kept, and ask for important ones again in HD or as a document.
Can I recover WhatsApp photos that show grey boxes after a restore?
Not from that backup. On iPhone, question marks or blank boxes after a restore mean the media wasn't properly backed up to iCloud, and WhatsApp says it can't be recovered from it. Ask the sender to send the photos again.
