To search WhatsApp messages, tap the search bar at the top of the Chats tab and type a word: results come from every chat. To search one conversation, open it and choose Search from its menu. Inside that search, a calendar icon jumps to a date. Filters narrow results to photos, links, documents and more.

Below: the steps on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web, a table of every way to find something, how lists and starred messages help, and the reasons search comes up empty when you know a message was there. Menus are as of October 2026.

How do I search all my WhatsApp chats at once?

  1. Open the Chats tab, the first screen WhatsApp shows.
  2. Tap the search bar at the top. On WhatsApp Web, click the magnifying glass above your chats.
  3. Type the word or phrase you remember.
  4. Tap a result to open that message in its chat.

Typing a contact's name also lists the groups you share with them under Groups in common, which is the quickest way to find a group whose name you have forgotten. Where Meta AI is available, the same bar also offers to ask Meta AI. WhatsApp says your chat results stay on your device, and that Meta doesn't connect what you type to you unless you send Meta AI a prompt.

How do I search inside one chat?

  • Android: open the chat, tap More options (the three dots) > Search, type, then tap the magnifying glass.
  • iPhone: open the chat, tap its name at the top, then Search. On an iPad, use the More menu > Search.
  • WhatsApp Web: open the chat and click the magnifying glass at the top of it.

On WhatsApp Web, WhatsApp's list of keyboard shortcuts saves a trip to the mouse: Ctrl+Alt+Shift+F searches the open chat on Windows, and Alt+K, or Cmd+K on a Mac, opens extended search.

Can you search WhatsApp messages by date?

Yes, inside one chat at a time, on Android, iPhone and WhatsApp Web. It jumps to a day rather than filtering results, which is how you find what a supplier quoted in March without remembering the exact words.

  1. Open the chat and start a search: More options > Search on Android, the chat's name > Search on iPhone, or the magnifying glass on WhatsApp Web.
  2. Tap or click the calendar icon.
  3. Pick the date.
  4. Tap OK on Android or Jump to date on iPhone. On WhatsApp Web, selecting the date is enough.

How do I find photos, links and documents?

Tap the search bar on the Chats tab and choose a type. Android offers Photos, GIFs, Links, Videos, Documents, Audio, Unread, Stickers and Polls; iPhone offers Photos, GIFs, Links, Videos, Documents, Audio and Polls. Type a word first, then choose a type, and the results narrow to that kind of message, which helps when a word turns up in dozens of chats.

Inside a chat, tap its name and open Media, links and docs to browse everything that chat has shared. On WhatsApp Web, the Media view in the left-hand menu collects what you received across all chats in the past 14 days and searches it by sender, caption or group name.

How do lists and starred messages help?

Lists filter the chat list rather than messages. Swipe down on the Chats tab to see All, Unread, Favorites and Groups, plus any lists you make, such as Family or Suppliers: tap the + among your lists (you may need to swipe along them to find it), or go to Settings > Lists > New list. A list stays applied until you change it or close and reopen WhatsApp. Marking a chat unread puts it back in Unread for you, but the sender still sees that you read the message.

Stars are for messages you will need again: an address, a booking reference, the landlord's UPI ID. Tap and hold the message and tap the star. All your starred messages are under More options > Starred on Android and Settings > Starred on iPhone, and on iPhone a chat's own stars are on its info screen.

Why can't WhatsApp find a message?

If you are sure a message existed, one of these is usually the reason search can't see it:

  • It was deleted, or the chat was cleared. WhatsApp can't recover a deleted message unless it is in a backup, and a deletion on one device syncs to your others.
  • It disappeared. With disappearing messages on, messages go after 24 hours, 7 days or 90 days unless someone kept them, and a view once photo, video or voice message can't be opened again.
  • You restored a backup recently. WhatsApp rebuilds its search database after a restore, which takes a while on a long history; don't force-close the app meanwhile. Restoring a WhatsApp backup covers the rest.
  • You are searching on a linked device. WhatsApp Web and the desktop apps hold only part of your history, and WhatsApp says the desktop app syncs more than WhatsApp Web. To search everything, use the phone; linked devices limits explains why.
  • The chat is archived or locked. WhatsApp suggests checking Archived chats, which archiving WhatsApp chats explains. Locked chats sit in their own folder; if you hid it, type your secret code in the search bar to open it.
  • It was sent before you joined the group. You only have what arrived after you joined, unless someone shared recent history with you; see message history for new members.
  • There is no text to match. A photo, video or voice message without a caption has no words for a keyword search to find, so browse by type or by date instead.

Searching WhatsApp at work

On a sales or support number, the phone's search is often the only full record. Two habits help. Star anything a colleague may ask about later. And export chats that matter: Export chat, in the chat's menu under More on Android or in the chat's info on iPhone, sends a text file of the conversation, with or without recent media, that you can search on a computer. It can't be imported back into WhatsApp. WhatsApp messages to Excel shows how to turn chats into rows.

Teams answering one number together hit a different limit. In WavesFlo's shared inbox, search covers a conversation's name, number and latest message, and threads start from when the number was linked, so it finds the customer, not a line deep in an old thread. For that, search on the phone that holds the number.
