As of October 2026 you can't remove Meta AI from WhatsApp. Its button stays on the Chats tab, the option to ask it stays in the search bar, and the help centre describes no way to hide either. It is optional, though: Meta can read only messages that mention @Meta AI or that someone chooses to share with it.

This guide covers where Meta AI shows up, the parts you can switch off, what Meta says it does with what you send, how to delete your chats with it, and where things stand in India. WhatsApp's and Meta's statements were checked against WhatsApp's help centre and Meta's newsroom on 5 October 2026.

What is Meta AI in WhatsApp?

Meta AI is the AI assistant made by WhatsApp's parent company, Meta, and built into the app. You can chat with it, bring it into a group chat, forward a message to it with a question, or have it create and edit images. Meta supplies the AI and the privacy and safety rules around it; WhatsApp decides where it appears. At its Indian launch in June 2024 it was built on Meta's Llama 3 model, and since May 2026 Meta has been bringing its newer Muse Spark model to Meta AI across its apps, WhatsApp included.

It belongs to the ordinary WhatsApp app. WhatsApp's help centre says Meta AI isn't available in the WhatsApp Business app, where businesses get a separate assistant for their own tasks and, in some countries, an AI agent that answers customers. The WhatsApp Business app features guide covers both.

Where does Meta AI appear in WhatsApp?

In several places, and not every account sees the same ones: WhatsApp says it tests different ways into Meta AI with different users.

Where Meta AI shows up in WhatsApp, and what reaches Meta, as of October 2026
PlaceWhat you seeWhat reaches Meta
Chats tabA round button, blue and purple or pink and purple, that opens a chat with Meta AIEverything you type in that chat
Search barAn option to ask Meta AI under your search resultsYour chat search stays on the phone; WhatsApp says Meta doesn't connect what you type to you unless you send a prompt. See how WhatsApp search works.
Group chatsAnyone in the group can type @Meta AI and a questionMessages that mention @Meta AI, and anything a member chooses to share with it
Forward menuMeta AI listed as a place to forward a messageThe forwarded message and your question
Summaries and writing helpA summary above unread messages, or rewrite options for a draftHandled by Private Processing, which WhatsApp says Meta can't read. Off by default.
Incognito and side chatsA temporary private chat with Meta AI, or private help inside any chatHandled by Private Processing and not stored, according to WhatsApp

WABetaInfo, which tracks WhatsApp's test builds, reported in March 2026 that some Android beta testers had a separate Meta AI tab in place of the button on the Chats tab. That moves Meta AI; it doesn't remove it.

Can you turn off or remove Meta AI in WhatsApp?

Not completely. As of October 2026 WhatsApp has no switch that removes Meta AI, and its help centre describes it as an optional service rather than something you disable. Ignoring it works: if you never message it, mention it or share anything with it, it has nothing of yours to read. These controls do exist:

  • Private Processing features. Message summaries and writing help are off by default and stay off unless you turn them on under Settings → Chats → Private Processing. The same screen has a switch for web search in Incognito chats with Meta AI.
  • Advanced chat privacy, per chat. Added in April 2025, it stops people in that chat from exporting it, saving its media automatically and using its messages for AI features. Tap the chat's name, then Advanced chat privacy.
  • Restricted chat, its replacement. WhatsApp's help centre says the latest versions are replacing Advanced chat privacy with Restricted chat, which adds one rule: nobody in the chat can open it on linked devices. In a group only admins can turn it on; in a one-to-one chat either person can. WABetaInfo reported it reaching Android and iPhone beta testers in early October 2026.
  • Parental controls. On a teen's account managed with parental controls, Settings → Parental controls → Meta AI → Limited restricts AI conversations further.
  • Deleting. You can delete your chats with Meta AI and ask Meta to delete its copy of what you shared, as described below.
Restricted chat applies to everyone in the chat, you included, so you can't open that conversation on your own WhatsApp Web or desktop app either. If you work from a computer, keep it for the chats that need it. The linked devices guide explains how linked devices work, and group admin settings covers the other switches only admins control.

Does Meta AI read your WhatsApp messages?

Not your personal chats, according to WhatsApp. Its help centre says only messages that mention @Meta AI, or that people choose to share with Meta AI, can be read by Meta, and that personal messages and calls stay end-to-end encrypted. What does get sent is treated differently:

  • Meta receives your prompts, the messages you share and your feedback, and may use them to improve its AI. WhatsApp's own advice is not to send Meta anything you don't want it to know.
  • In some countries, Meta AI may also use information from accounts you've added to Accounts Center (being renamed Meta Account), such as Facebook or Instagram, including your interests, age and location.
  • In a group, the member who mentions @Meta AI decides what gets shared, not the rest of the group. Advanced chat privacy or Restricted chat is how a group stops that.
  • Meta AI may search the web to answer you. WhatsApp says the search query goes to search engines without being connected to your account.
  • Private Processing features, such as summaries, writing help, Incognito chats and side chats, run in a secure environment that WhatsApp says neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read, and the messages aren't stored afterwards. As of October 2026 they support English, Indonesian, Portuguese and Spanish only.
  • When a business answers you with Meta's AI agent, WhatsApp shows a notice that AI from Meta receives the chat to improve its AI and write replies for that business.
  • Third-party AI agents connected to WhatsApp are different again: WhatsApp says those chats run through a Meta service on the agent's behalf and aren't considered end-to-end encrypted.

A sensible rule for any AI chat: no OTPs, no Aadhaar or PAN numbers, no bank or UPI details, and nothing about another person that they wouldn't want passed on.

How to delete your Meta AI chats

Deleting a chat removes it from your phone. Deleting Meta AI's own copy of what you shared takes a typed command. Either way, a deleted chat can't be restored.

  1. To clear a chat from your phone, delete the chat with Meta AI from your chat list, as you would any other chat.
  2. To delete Meta AI's copy of one chat, open that chat with Meta AI, type /reset-ai and send it.
  3. To delete Meta AI's copy of every chat you've used it in, including group chats, open the chat with Meta AI, type /reset-all-ais and send it.

Incognito chats don't accept /reset-ai: by default they disappear when you leave them and aren't stored. If you want a record before you delete anything, WhatsApp's help centre also explains how to download your Meta AI chat history.

Is Meta AI available in India?

Yes, for many but not all users. Meta began rolling Meta AI out in India in English on 24 June 2024, across WhatsApp, Facebook, Messenger and Instagram, and added Hindi, including Hindi typed in Roman script, on 23 July 2024. WhatsApp still describes availability as gradual: you might not have it even when others in your country do, and it recommends keeping the app updated.

Two details explain many missing features. In some countries Meta AI only appears on phones set to certain languages; WhatsApp's list includes English, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi and Urdu, but doesn't say which countries the rule covers. And because Private Processing supports only four languages, summaries and writing help work in English alone in India, wherever they have rolled out.

Businesses are a separate story. On 15 May 2026 Meta launched Business AI for eligible small businesses in India, an AI that answers customers inside the WhatsApp Business app. In WhatsApp's help centre the business agent is called Meta Business Agent; connecting it turns off greeting and away messages and unlinks the account's linked devices, most of which can be linked again afterwards.

Questions

Can I remove Meta AI from WhatsApp?

No. As of October 2026 WhatsApp has no setting that removes the Meta AI button or the option to ask it in the search bar. It is optional: if you never message it, mention it or share anything with it, Meta has nothing of yours to read.

Only messages that mention @Meta AI or that someone chooses to share with it, according to WhatsApp's help centre. Other personal messages and calls stay end-to-end encrypted. Meta may use what is shared with Meta AI to improve its AI.

How do I stop people using Meta AI in my WhatsApp group?
