A welcome should name the person, say why the group exists, and tell them the one thing they need first. Keep it to two or three lines, and send it after they have joined so it appears in the chat for them. WhatsApp has no automatic group welcome, so an admin or a colleague posts it by hand.

What makes a welcome work?

  • Use the person's name so it reads as for them.
  • One next step, such as a time, a link or a buddy.
  • No rules list. Point to the group description for that.
  • Do not tag the whole group to cheer; a few replies are enough.

For business and customer groups, with ten longer welcome messages, see WhatsApp group welcome message.
