Your WhatsApp display picture is changed from Settings by tapping your own profile picture, and who can see it is set separately under Settings > Privacy > Profile picture, where the choices are Everyone, My contacts, My contacts except… and Nobody. WhatsApp also blocks screenshots of profile photos on supported Android and iOS versions, in both directions, and says that cannot be switched off.

Below: the steps on Android, iPhone and the Business app, what the four privacy settings actually do, why WhatsApp publishes no pixel size, the screenshot rule, and what to check when a contact's picture won't load. Menus are as of October 2026.

How to change your WhatsApp DP on Android

  1. Tap More options, the three vertical dots, then Settings.
  2. Tap your profile picture, then tap Edit.
  3. Tap Camera to take a new photo, or Gallery to choose one you already have.
  4. Move and resize the circle to crop the image, then tap Done.

The same screen offers two other routes: Ai images, which generates a picture from a prompt you type, and an import from Facebook or Instagram if you have added WhatsApp to your Meta Account. To clear the picture altogether, tap the bin icon and then Remove.

How to change your WhatsApp DP on iPhone

  1. Tap your profile picture to open Settings, then tap it again and tap Edit.
  2. Tap Take photo, then Use Photo, to shoot a new one; or Choose photo, then Choose, to pick an existing one.
  3. Or tap Create Ai image and type a prompt.
  4. To clear it, tap Delete photo, then Delete.

If you add WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram to the same Meta Account, you can also sync one picture across all three from Settings > Meta Account > Syncing profile pictures. WhatsApp warns that changing the picture on any synced account updates the others, which is worth knowing before you turn it on for a business account.

Who can see your WhatsApp profile picture?

Visibility is a separate setting from the picture itself. On Android it is under More options > Settings > Privacy > Profile picture; on iPhone, under your profile, then Privacy.

SettingWho sees your picture
EveryoneAnyone who has your number, including people you have never messaged
My contactsOnly numbers saved in your phone's contacts
My contacts except…Your contacts, minus the ones you pick
NobodyNo one; your picture shows as the default silhouette

Two consequences people miss. On Everyone, a stranger messaging you from a stray number sees your face, which is the usual reason to move a personal account to My contacts. And on Nobody, the setting is symmetrical in effect for a business: a customer who is about to receive a reply from an unfamiliar number has nothing to recognise you by.

This matters more than it looks when customers message a number they have not saved. Someone who gets a reply from an unsaved number judges it on the picture and the name alone, which is the same problem messaging WhatsApp without saving the number describes from the other side.

The Business app: profile photo and cover photo

The WhatsApp Business app has two images, not one. Open the Tools tab, tap Profile, then tap your profile photo and the pencil icon to change it; tapping the cover photo changes the wide image behind it. Both are public by default, which WhatsApp states on the page itself.

One restriction applies to businesses with an active Meta Verified subscription: changes to the profile name and picture go through review and approval rather than taking effect immediately. Plan a rebrand around that rather than discovering it on the day.

The profile photo is the cheapest trust signal a business account has, and it is worth keeping identical across every number you reply from, next to a consistent name and About line. What the WhatsApp Business app does covers the rest of the profile fields.

What size should a WhatsApp DP be?

WhatsApp publishes no pixel dimensions for a profile picture, so any specific number you find is somebody's measurement rather than a documented rule. What WhatsApp does document is the behaviour: you move and resize a circle over the image to crop it, and the picture is displayed as a circle everywhere in the app.

Which gives you the only guidance that holds. Use a square image, keep the subject centred and well inside the middle, and assume the corners will be cut off. A logo with text around the edge is the usual casualty: it reads fine in a gallery and loses its words in the circle.

Can someone screenshot your WhatsApp profile picture?

Not on a supported device. WhatsApp blocks screenshots of profile photos: you cannot screenshot someone else's, and they cannot screenshot yours. WhatsApp says the block is enforced on supported Android and iOS versions and that the feature cannot be disabled.

Two things that follows from. The block is per-device, so a device on an unsupported version is outside it, and it covers screenshots rather than other ways of capturing a screen. And it answers the most common question about other people's pictures: there is no legitimate route to saving one, and tools that claim to download a profile photo by number are working against a setting the owner chose.

Why can't I see someone's WhatsApp profile picture?

The likeliest answer is that they have set Profile picture to My contacts and you are not saved in their phone, or they have set it to Nobody. Neither is visible from your side, and neither is a fault.

If pictures have stopped loading generally, WhatsApp's help centre lists these checks:

  • Re-sync your contacts. On Android, open your phone's Settings, go to Password, passkeys & accounts > WhatsApp > Account sync, make sure Contacts is on, then tap the three-dot menu and Sync now. On some Android devices the path is Accounts and backup > Manage accounts > WhatsApp.
  • Check your own privacy setting, if the complaint is that a contact cannot see your picture.
  • Restart the phone, update WhatsApp, and try a different Wi-Fi network or hotspot.
  • Ask your mobile provider to confirm your APN settings, if nothing above helps.

A missing profile picture and missing photos in chats are separate problems with separate causes; WhatsApp images not showing covers the second one.

Questions

How do I change my WhatsApp display picture?

On Android, tap the three-dot menu > Settings, tap your profile picture, then Edit, and choose Camera or Gallery. On iPhone, tap your profile picture to open Settings, tap it again, then Edit, and choose Take photo or Choose photo.

How do I hide my WhatsApp profile picture from someone?

Go to Settings > Privacy > Profile picture and choose My contacts except…, then pick the people to exclude. Choosing Nobody hides it from everyone, and My contacts limits it to numbers saved in your phone.

What size should a WhatsApp DP be?

WhatsApp does not publish a pixel size. It crops the image to a circle that you move and resize yourself, so use a square picture with the subject centred and expect the corners to be cut off.

Can people screenshot my WhatsApp profile picture?

No, on supported Android and iOS versions. WhatsApp blocks screenshots of profile photos in both directions, and states the feature cannot be disabled.

Why can't I see a contact's WhatsApp profile photo?

Usually because their Profile picture privacy is set to My contacts and you are not saved in their phone, or it is set to Nobody. If no pictures load at all, re-sync your contacts, restart the phone and update WhatsApp.

Is the WhatsApp Business profile photo public?

Yes, by default, and so is the cover photo. Both are changed from the Tools tab under Profile. Businesses on an active Meta Verified subscription need their profile name and picture changes reviewed and approved first.

Can I use the same profile picture on WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram?

Yes, if all three are added to the same Meta Account. Turn it on under Settings > Meta Account > Syncing profile pictures. Changing the picture on any synced account then updates the others.
